keep coming back

Hi everyone,

Will I have tried APRSIS and don’t care for it much. Have tried to get Xastir and BPQ working but I’m not a Linux guy. Started out with UI-View after trying some other Windows sytems many years ago and keep coming back. Loved all the features it had to bad they don’t all still worked. Wish there was a way to reverse engineer and update it. Wonder how many out there are like me and still use it.

I’am not sure but I believe 2006 or 2007 was when I started with it. Like you 15 years plus or minus a little.

Next best thing to UI-View.

Can’t beat the mapping. But needs more UI-V features.

RE Pinpoint:

1)? It is hopelessly tethered to the Internet.? You can't do decent mapping without an Internet connection. Yes, you can cache fixed map views (i.e. static bit map "pictures of maps").? But it lacks freely-scrollable, zoomable vector-based mapping off-line. ? UIview can operate autonomously (i.e. in the field or a mobile) without an Internet connection because the entire Precision Mapping database of North America is installed on your local hard drive.

2)? During my experiments with APRS on 60 meters, I discovered a shortcoming Pinpoint that is shared with most other APRS clients except UIview:? ?? You can't force a beacon manually.

[On 60 meters, automated transmissions are prohibited due to the band being shared with federal government users. You have to be able to listen first to the channel and then trigger a transmission on demand.? At my request, the author of YAAC added a manual beacon-on-demand function to his program.? So far other programs (other than UIview) lack this capability.]

3)? Digipeating depends on the digipeating function built-into classic hardware TNCs.?? No digi function is built into the Pinpoint program.

*UIview still outdoes them all, even after 18 years of non-development!*

I started using UI-View in 2003 and still have a copy running to monitor telemetry from two digipeaters.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned YAAC (Yet Another APRS Client).? Plenty of features, currently supported, developer responsive to problems and requests for features, runs on Windows and Linux (including Raspberry Pi).? Worth a look - just search for YAAC.

Hummmmm have not heard of this one. Will give it a look.

?Yes...??? The ONLY APRS client that can cache scalable vector-based map into locally.

The author has actually converted the entire Open Street Map database for the US and Canada to a format that works with with YAAC.? All of North America (or selected portions) can be downloaded to your computer for off-line use.? (These are fully-scrollable zoomable-to-street-level vector maps just like Precision Mapping or MapPoint.)
