Interesting Discovery about UIview and Precision Mapping 9.0

Precision Mapping 9.0 in conjunction with the "Precision Mapping Server 9.0"
plugin for UIview32 has been the preferred Mapping solution for North American
users of UIview. It provides a seamless? fully-zoomable? down-to-street-level
view of all of the US & Canada and major roads in Mexico. Precision Mapping 9.0
data (about 3.5GB) resides ENTIRELY on your local hard disk.? NO Internet
connection is required, making it invaluable for? in-the-field? use when no
Internet connection is available.

Traditionally, the Precision Mapping program was installed from a CD or DVD.
You started up Precision Mapping? outside of UIview, and went through a
registration process on the first-time-run, using an on-line server to receive
the "magic number" required to activate the stand-alone program.? You then
installed the Precision Mapping Server 9.0 plugin for UIview, so that Precision
Mapping's database could be used inside UIview as an alternative to fixed
(static) maps.

The Precision Mapping program is now out-of-print since the publisher (Undertow
Software) abruptly exited the consumer mapping market several years ago.??
[Apparently an victim of the foolish assumption that you will always have
cellular data connections and can use Google Maps online instead.]???? Although
the product is discontinued, the registration? server has remained online, so
that new installs from existing CDs can still be activated. However, there is
no guarantee how long this will continue.

During a recent new from-scratch UIview32/Precision Mapping 9.0 setup, I
accidentally discovered that the registration/activation drill involving the
on-line server is ...... ?? NOT REQUIRED IF YOU ONLY WANT TO USE Precision
Mapping 9.0 WITH UIview !

Install Precision Mapping 9.0 normally, open the stand-alone version once, but
DON'T go through the prompted first-time-run/online registration drill.?
Instead, just choose "Later", close the program, reboot and then install the
PMap Server 9.0 plug-in. ?? Then start UIview and select the "Precision Mapping
Server 9.0" choice in the "Map, Load a Map" pulldown. You only need the on-line
registration/activation drill to use Precision Mapping in the stand-alone mode
outside of UIview.

I.e, even if the on-line registration server disappears, you can still install
an unlimited number of UIview/PMap9 setups without it,? from a single DVD or
ISO image of Precision Mapping 9.0.

That is great news. Thanks for the update.

Stephen, That's fantastic. I've been using PM9 in that fashion for several computers. What I'd like to see redeveloped is the weather radar on/over/in UI-View32. There was a "fix" someone posted but was super complicated.
Any takers. Would have been very useful the past few weeks. Yes I do have other programs that display the wx radar but was very convenient on a single screen with UI-View32 running. Not interested in any other version of APRS.
