Registration Fail

Rod Templeton

I've installed UI-View32 on my machine at home, and after entering my registration information, I get an error message that says "That registration information is invalid" I have confirmed that it is not installed under Program Files.

I went back to the registration page and resubmitted my information, just in case something had changed. The number came back the same as I've previously used. Which also works on other APRS-IS applications as well.

I connected remotely to my work machine, which is also running UI-View32 and it loads with no problems. I checked the registration information under the Help menu, and it reports that it is registered to Rod Templeton, VE7RJT.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding this, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rod Templeton, VE7RJT

Please do not mix up the uiview registration code with this
5-digit number for APRS-IS.

Do not confuse the UIview registration code used to activate UIview itself (which is based on a hash of your callsign & name, and is unique to UIview),? -- and the 4 or 5 digit "pass code" used to log onto the APRS Internet System (which is based only a hash of your callsign only, and is the same for any APRS application connecting to the APRS-IS).

Before using a new UIview installation, review this extensive discussion of the numerous things that need to be changed and updated after the basic install. (UIview has been frozen in time for over 16 years now, , since it's author abruptly died of cancer in 2004.)

Hello Manfred,

I admit that I had tried to use the 5-digit APRS-IS code. Then I tried the UI-View registration code and that failed as well.

I did get a direct email in response to the post though, telling me to use my call, the registration number, and my first name only (for some reason). This worked.

Not sure why it changed, but the issue is resolved.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and assistance.

Actually, since you said you had another working UIview installation, all you would have had to do is copy the file "uireg.bin" from the old setup's main folder to the same place on the new one. ? This file is created when you enter the name, call,? and activation code into the first-time-run prompt on a new system.? You wouldn't have had to even apply for a new reg code.

As information I had used UI-View for years and about a month ago it started giving me all kinds of heartburn mainly not posting to the Internet. After trying to fix it with much help, I finally just gave up on it and loaded the APRSISCE app after studying a number of other APRS apps. It is like night and day! Many more features and it was the only one that supported a soundcard TNC which I have used for years and the Rascal optical interface between my radio and computer.

UI-View is so old now that it requires all kinds of fixes to get it to work correctly. The author passed away years ago and the source code was destroyed upon his death bed instruction I am told. I learned a lot about how these applications work but APRSISCE has been the most impressive!

Do this program use maps like UI-View? I realize it used an old version of
Street Atlas. Plus, how easy is it to get connected with the APRS servers?

Thanks,

UI-View has supported sound card TNCs from the start, and the changes to get it to conform to current settings are minimal.
