Anyone for MIR?

Roger Barker <[email protected]

The pass times for MIR are now in the evening, which should make it
easier for more people to have a try at digi'ing their beacons via the
satellite. Yesterday evening (19th) I found it quite easy to get a
beacon through using only 3W from a handheld into a zero gain vertical
antenna.

The MIR frequency is 145.985, but, if the tuning step of your rig is
12.5kHz, the Doppler shift will allow you to get in during the first
part of each pass if you use 145.9875.

In UI-View "Station Setup", set "Unproto address" to "BEACON,R0MIR",
make sure your "Beacon comment" is short, and set "Beacon interval" to
0.5 (every 30 seconds). However, once you've seen that your beacon has
been digi'd, please set the interval to something longer to give others
a chance!

The pass times for MIR for the next few days for my location (Boston)
are:-

This pass was voice - could hear a french speaking cosmonaut :-)
21st July 21:33:19 10:15 62
FWIW according to STSPLUS, all the following passes should be visible
to the naked eye for at least part of the pass. (Its really cloudy here
at the moment)

I plan to try for the 23.08 pass tonight if its on data.

22nd July 00:43:46 09:21 17

Yay! Not sure if I digipeated thru at all, no asterix by my call :( but

g7omn-3 and g7ocw I heard (probably direct??)

ok1smn in JO70BS
d02dp-10 in JO31NK
both those were ordinary UI packets that contained a locator that UIVIEW
snatched succesfully.

M0BII 148miles due 103deg
G8MZX 134miles due 96 degrees
G4ZEC-1 127miles due 130degree

Also in the capture file were packets from:
pe1rdw-3 running aprs, but ui-view didnt spot him I think because he set
his UI packets to his Locator square???? as did PE5YES -- are we looking
at a new APRS 'mode' here???

also saw EB7FME trying to level two connect to G3SOA and F5ILB in adjacent
packets

S57NML tried to connect to M0CJV

AND the clouds parted and I got the best naked eye look at MIR yet as it
drifted over my back garden.

Thanks for flagging this one up Roger. Great fun!

Heard mir again last night at 21:00 but still nothing
on the screen.

Decided to have a listen around on voice and
discovered VERY low RX sigs then discovered short on
antenna downlead.

23:00 pass much better!!!

Heard several stations then switched back to 144.800
and heard G4LVZ in Tamworth and G7VUR mobile in North
Birmingham.

David.

To reply to my own message...

It seems that on the earlier passes the French person in the MIR crew is
operating on phone. I can't imagine what several hundred stations on FM
all calling at once must sound like!

The later passes are packet. I definitely have more success at the very
start of the pass, presumably because the satellite is still out of
range of a lot of the EU traffic.

I have also noticed PE stations using what one is announcing as "APRS
space mode" - perhaps this is another addition to the "protocol"?

Come on where were you all? I'll be watching carefully on the 23:35 BST

I was there- but despite several connected stations, nothing in UI except from
MIR and a couple digipeating to each other.

I heard you at the end of the pass, but not thru MIR. Bit of an odd one that,
60degree elevation and 5/9 signals!
