Re: Idea and Questions.

From: Roger Barker <roger@...>Thanks, Roger. I guess I didn't RTFM about this one. GIF is smaller, BMP is faster to load. The next update will load GIFsThey work fine. In fact, they were created in Paintshop Pro 5. They were screen grabbed from AutoRoute 2000 (By the way, guys AR2000 produces absolutely superb maps, and isn't a bad route planner either), pasted into PSP5 and then saved. The current method of loading GIFs is to convert them to a BMP usingAs said above, I've not used gif2bmp, so it can't be that. Should it matter whether they are 87a or 89a gif format? Thanks, once again Roger. Keith. G6NHU |

(The Ctrl is needed to differentiate between clicks concerned with maps and clicks concerned with stations.) Or you can Ctrl + right-click a blue square to get a one line menu giving the map description, which can then be clicked to load the map. Secondly - More about maps.GIF is smaller, BMP is faster to load. The next update will load GIFs about twice as fast as previous versions, but loading GIFs will always be slower than loading BMPs because they have to be uncompressed. I ask because I've had probems with gifs. With some gifs, I find thatIt sounds like there's something unusual about your GIFs. Do they load ok into graphics utilities, such as PaintShop Pro, and actually identify as GIF format? The current method of loading GIFs is to convert them to a BMP using GIF2BMP.EXE which you will find in the UI-VIEW directory, load the BMP into the map window, and then delete it. Yours are obviously failing during the conversion, so either the format is wrong, or GIF2BMP.EXE is corrupted. From the next update, GIFs will be loaded direct into the map window without the intermediate step, but you'll obviously still get a problem if the format of the files is incorrect. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... Idea and Questions.
Keith Maton
Roger.
An idea - How easy this would be, I don't know. Maps are shown with the blue squares indicating smaller maps. I've now made a few for the area. Would it be possible for UI-View to load these smaller maps simply by clicking on the blue corner square? Secondly - More about maps. What is the preferred format? gif or bmp? I ask because I've had probems with gifs. With some gifs, I find that when I load them, UIV crashes with a GPF. When I look in the map directory, it's created a .bmp of 1.05K with the same name as the .gif that I had. If I delete the .bmp and try again, the same happens. If I convert the gif to a bmp, it works OK. Odd. Keith G6NHU |
Additional feature?

Hello Roger.
Just a thought. UI-View sends out a Beacon when first run, I believe, which should enable the appropriate Symbol to appear on the map for that call. Would it be possible to have UI-View send out a "remove" Symbol command when UI-View is closed down. Because it doesn't do this, there are users around with unexpired Symbols which state they are there, when in fact, they aren't, if you see what I am getting at? ie. if you are going to send a "Hello" beacon on start-up of UI-View, why not send a "Farewell" beacon on closure of UI-View? Can new Callsigns be made to flash when they appear on the map for the first time, or at least appear in a different colour, until confirmed with the reception of their next beacons? eg. new ones Red, confirmed Green, or Font size is different etc? Can messages be timestamped so we can see what time the messages were left. There is enough room for a Timestamp column. I have no idea what suitable maps are available in other countries, and I know that I would be inundated with questions from overseas users. It's very easy with something like this to reach a point where all the time you have available to spend on it is actually spent on support, and so development of the program grinds to a halt. Also, at the moment in the USA, controversy has finally erupted over WB4APR's attempts to restrict the writing of APRS compatible software. (I'm amazed that he managed to keep the lid on it for so many years!) Therefore I certainly wouldn't want anyone over there to start using UI-View, in case it got involved in the argument. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... Boston, UK |

How about using the logging system in UI-View?

Go to the 'Log' drop down and start a log. Only thing is to remember to restart it every time you reload UI-View. Using a log file is also useful for those mobiles that zip around the screen. So that you can replay it later. I have one of G7PAF driving around Leeds now. BTW - Thanks for the program Roger, it's providing hours of interest and experiment here at least. :-) I've been asked by a station in the US if it will be released for general availability soon? <rayjones@...> writes From: "Raymond Jones" <rayjones@...>That's because of the way BPQ works. You can tell it what monitored frames you want it to decode by passing it a port mask (e.g. you can say "provide decoded monitored frames from ports 1, 3, 4"), but the same mask applies to all host mode applications. At the moment, when WinPack starts up, it sets the port mask to whatever you have input using the virtual TNC MASK command (I think the default is ports 1 to 8) but it sets the mask to 0 when it closes, so UI-View stops getting monitored frames. What I really need to do is to stop using BPQ's internal mask, and mask the ports myself in WinPack, but that will have to wait for the next WinPack update. Secondly, I have my normal packet machine, a P133, 48 Meg, W95 and theIf you close WinPack, you're breaking the DDE link. In the next update, I'll force UI-View to close at that point, because once you've broken the link, it won't re-establish itself. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... Boston, UK |

UI-View monitoring.
"Raymond Jones" <[email protected]
Hello Roger,
I don't know whether the following problem is unavoidable, or whether I am doing something which is not intended. Firstly, with a 486DX2/66, 12 Meg, W95, UI-View 071b (yes, I do now have the later upgrade!) BPQ, NODE2BAY and Baycom modem, I can successfully run UI-View on its own, without Winpack. I presume that is intended. If I start Winpack, all is fine. If I then close down Winpack, the UI-View monitoring ceases. Monitoring can be re-started by either re-loading Winpack or shutting down and re-loading UI-View. Secondly, I have my normal packet machine, a P133, 48 Meg, W95 and the dreaded Flexnet. UI-View is in DDE mode of course, and so Winpack is loaded for UI-View to run. If I unload Winpack, and then re-load it, then UI-View does not recommence monitoring. 73, Ray, G3NKL |
Ui-View Updates..
"Mark - M1AJG" <[email protected]
Hello all,
Many thanks for the latest update of UI-View Roger...It`s proving extremely popular around the West Yorkshire area with many stations using the software or modifying their beacons to contain their locations.. Just a quick question to you Roger, Is it possible to keep a list of RX`ed stations so that when a newer release of your software is installed the stations received earlier can be re-called...I had a nice map going till I installed the 0.73b release and no matter which files I choose not to overwrite, I can`t get the original stations back.. Dunno if the above makes much sense :-) 73 all de Mark (M1AJG) |
V0.73b Available
Roger Barker <[email protected]
I've just uploaded the V0.73b update to my web site. Please note that
this is only an update, not a complete installation system. The update can be applied to V0.6b or later. The url is:- Please don't publicise the link outside this mailing list. Here are the relevant sections of HISTORY.TXT:- [There was a V0.72b, but it was only released to one person.] V0.73b 1999-Apr-14 1. Symbols added to SYMBOLS.TXT for BBS and node. 2. The [TRANSLATE] section added to SYMBOLS.TXT. This allows you to assign a symbol to a particular callsign type, irrespective of what symbol character the stations transmit. For example, all GB7??? stations can be made to display as BBSs, even if they are only transmitting locator beacons. There is more information about this in the comments in SYMBOLS.TXT and in the "UI-View Symbols" section of the help. 3. The Ping report window now autosizes, previously it was too small for some callsigns. 4. File menu added, with Print options. 5. Exit menu option moved to the File menu. 6. Font option added to the station right-click menu. 7. Bug fixed with changing the label background colour. 8. The scroll position of the map is saved between program sessions. 9. The size and position of the Terminal window is saved between program sessions. 10. Help updated to reflect the above changes. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... Boston, UK |
Binary Attachments!!
Roger Barker <[email protected]
A couple of days ago, someone inadvertently sent the HAPPY99.EXE
worm/virus to my WinPack mailing list. It caused several people a problem, and so I thought it was worthwhile sending the following to this list:- 1. This list is not moderated. I do not check any of the postings before you get them. 2. Please do not send binary attachments to the list. 3. If we all do '2', then, should any binary attachments be received, they can be treated with extreme suspicion! 4. If you receive a copy of HAPPY99.EXE from any source, even your best mate, DON'T RUN IT! The sender is completely unaware that he has sent it! -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... Boston, UK |

Window sizes
John Bent
Hi Roger,
In a similar vein to Alans request about scroll bars on the maps retaining their previous settings, could the same be done for the terminal screen? I usually have it open at the bottom of the screen sized to a couple of lines, however if I have to close the program it defaults back to centre screen next time round. A minor quible in an otherwise excellent program Roger, thanks. 73 de John (G0FSM) |
