Re: BBS calls

"John Nixon" <[email protected]

Thanks for the update Roger, now displaying correctly on my packet machine
in Win 3.11. I am still awaiting repair of the W95 packet machine !

I still have it running on 2 machines, under win 3.11 and W95, on both 2 and
70cms. There does appear to be a slight problem with the background colour
of Ui stations and non-ui stations, they are both the same !

Hmmm.. not too sure how well detecting a BBS from the sending stations
call
would work, it may be a single isolated case but I know of one BBS that is
sending beacons from the sysops own call:-

18:33:46R G4MRU>ID Port=1 <UI C>:
!5328.70N/00135.60W-GB7MRU Sheffield

The other two BBS's that I can here from here at the moment are however
sending beacons from the BBS call
i.e. GB7???

Or were you meaning only to look at the call in the case of a station that
is
sending a locator square rather than an longitude/latitude style beacon?
I've now had a go at it. I think it should work. What I've done is:

(a) Added symbols to SYMBOLS.BMP and SYMBOLS.TXT for BBS and node.

(b) Added a [TRANSLATE] section to SYMBOLS.TXT, which allows you to put
in callsign patterns, or individual callsigns, and what you want them to
be displayed as. The default entries (which can, of course, be removed)
are:-

GB7???=BBS
GB7??=NODE

In the case you quote of the sysops callsign being used, then you could
add:-
G4MRU=BBS

(Although it would be better if he changed his '-' to a 'B'.)
Both the sysops of GB7MRU and GB7ADH have updated their beacon text,
transmitted on 2 & 70 cms, to include the 'B' character instead of the '-'
character as of Sunday 11th April.

New Beacon is !5328.70N/00135.60WBGB7MRU Sheffield

After much experimentation, we have been unable to include the BBS call
instead of the Node call in the beacon, as it appears to affect the >mail
and >NNA unproto beacons. Hope the inclusion of the 'B' character will help.
More testing will take place, although the use of NODEcall may change in the
future if the DCC removes the option of using the HOMEcall and insists in
the use of the BBScall as the NODEcall. I am afraid that although I use BPQ
myself, I am not an expert in its configuration...perhaps only G8BPQ was !
and the sysops concerned wish to retain their own call as the node call.
Perhaps we have missed something somewhere !

The nodes GB7NC and GB7NS (and hopefully GB7AX soon) are also Tx'ing locator
information on 2m and 70cms. Is there a suggestion that we should replace
the '-' character with a 'B' character, or perhaps another character such as
'N' for Node?

Thoughts please

I can see Ui-View becoming a very useful tool for network management and
wonder whether Roger has considered perhaps the use of 'layering' (for want
of a word) so that the user could selectively show the stations on the map ?

For instance user selectable display of something like :-
1) Ui-View Stations
2) Other non UI stations
3) Wx Stations
4) BBS Stations
5) Node Stations
6) All Stations
etc (if more are needed !!!), switchable on and off as required.

Sorry for giving you an instant headache Roger, I guess it may be a little
tricky !

The appropriate symbol and description is then used, irrespective of
whether the station is transmitting a full long/lat or just a locator.

Any comments will be gratefully received, before I put it in the next
update.
