AI for Editors course on using ChatGPT
4
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has happened to take this AI for Editors course or found any other resources helpful for learning about ChatGPT. I have watched the two ACES webinars on AI from this year and recently subscribed to Mignon Fogarty's AI Sidequest newsletter; that seems like it will be helpful. Feedback on instructors of fall Advanced Editorial Workshop sections?
11
Hello, I hope your summer is going well. I will take the Advanced Editorial Workshop starting in September. The three instructor options are Felice Danielle, Susan Schott Karr, and Val M. Mathews. Does anyone happen to have any feedback on these instructors? I have taken a class with Susan Schott Karr but am unfamiliar with the other two except for what is in their bios. I have enjoyed all of the instructors in the editing sequence, but just thought I would check. Kristine

Question on two potential items to include in style sheets
3
Hello everyone, I have two questions related to style sheets. 1. I recently came across a LinkedIn post suggesting that editors include a reader profile at the beginning of a style sheet after agreeing on one with your client. Has anyone tried this? It seems like a good idea. 2. Do you note which section of CMOS or other style guide applies to a grammar guideline that you include on your style sheet after you list the guideline? I think this would be helpful for me so I can look up the section again and get a feel for which sections are most relevant to my projects. I'm not sure if this would be too confusing for the client or if they even pay much attention to style sheets. If you are taking one of the advanced editorial workshops that start in the next two weeks, I hope you have a good class! I am eager to finish the certificate but will wait until fall because of my summer travel schedule. Kristine

Spreadsheet for tracking client inquiries
3
I wanted to mention that recently I watched a good webinar on sample edits by Amber Helt (mentioned at the end of the last thread). Although not directly related to sample edits, one piece of information I found especially useful was a link to a spreadsheet she uses to track client inquiries (https://bit.ly/3bM1PPS).

Information on getting into art editing?
2
I recently met a freelancer who wants to work on special interest publications or custom publications for museums, galleries, event producers, or brands; she wants to focus on Black/African American art and culture. This is really outside of my field of science/environmental writing and editing. Would anyone happen to have any tips for her to reach the right people to learn more about these types of opportunities?

I'll start (?)

Fall 2022 was not a great semester for me. I did fine in our class; I just didn’t feel that I was very engaged, and (as you all know) it’s in the engagement above and beyond the required coursework that real learning happens. My goal for next semester is to make class my priority and not let myself get distracted with all the other things that can eat up a person’s days. Many of those things are important—medical appointments and fighting with insurers (or being on endless hold to fight with them), for instance, have been almost a full-time job for me this week—but many are not urgent, many others are not as urgent as I make them, and the majority are simply evasive tactics to get out of working on corollaries to our coursework such as pointing up my resume, establishing a LinkedIn profile, and applying for jobs. As an incentive, I have the knowledge that my old job (such as it was) ended in November, leaving me to survive in costly SoCal on a shockingly small amount of Social Security, shored up by every kind of benefit, discount, waiver, supplement, and program you can imagine. In other words, I need to get a job, before idle unemployment begins to gnaw its way through my savings, which are also shockingly small and which I’ve earmarked for better things than just surviving. Surprisingly, I am not belly-aching. At this point, I can still see my woes as challenges—as preludes to adventure. Let’s revisit the matter when I’m living in a tent, shall we? Looking forward to continued exchanges with y’all. Jim
