TeraTerm Problems

I am trying to connect to my TT4 with TeraTerm (latest version).? It shows me three options to connect to.? One seems to be a RT Systems Cable.? That can't be the right one, can it?? I connect to it but only get a black screen.? I seem to remember from several years ago that I had to put TeraTerm into a special command mode by quickly pressing escape three times or something but for the life of me I can't seem to get that right.? There are two other options offered when I go to connect.? One is Com 5 and one is Com 6.? Sometimes it will connect and sometimes it won't.? I am trying to connect at 1200 baud which is what the radio is set at.? Is that the correct baud rate?? Can someone walk me through how to do this.? I am trying to tune the RX AMP on the TT4 for an iGate installation on a new radio.? The radio is a Yeasu FTM400 XDR and the PC is a newish Windows 11 PC.? Maybe two years old.? Latest Windows updates installed.? Connection to the radio is through the MIC and SPKR jacks as the data jack won't transmit on APRS and there is no cable manufactured for the data jack by the TT4 folks.? Thanks!

The TT4 to computer connection has 2 different baud rates.
When the TT4 "powers up", it starts in "boot loader" mode at a baud rate of 19200 -> either port (Port A or Port B).
? ?This is explained in the Tiny Trak4 Quick Start Guide on page 2 under Configure the Alpha firmware.
? ?The boot loader is what will provide the message "?" followed by "Press ESC 3 times to enter TT4 Options Menu"
? ? ? NOTE:? the "?" is the actual boot loader that is used to update the firmware itself.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?the second message "Press ESC 3 times to enter TT4 Options Menu" is the one for configuring the settings.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?You will need to press Esc 3 times within a couple of seconds of seeing that message (or just press t several times while starting the TT4).
TeraTerm is just a terminal, and has no special mode for this - just set the com port and baud rate to match your interface.
? ?It is unlikely the port is the RT Systems.
? ?You will have to determine if the correct port is COM5 or COM6 (try each while powering the TT4).? When you see the "Press Esc ..." you found it.
? ?Again, the baud rate for this step is ALWAYS 19200,n,8,1.
IMPORTANT:? when using a USB to TTL cord (such as the Byonics TT-USB) that has power on pin4, it is VERY IMPOLRTANT you make the connection at the DE9 connector with TeraTerm running at the correct settings.? You cannot "reconnect" at the PC USB port, as that will cause TeraTerm to "forget" the COM# port and it will not be reay for use when the TT4 sends the "Press Esc ..." information.

After the TT4 finishes the boot sequence (unless you press Esc 3 times to interrupt it), it will change to the firmware settings (ABAUD or BBAUD depending on the connection).??
? ?The "on air" (1200 baud) baud rate is of no value for this configuration.

Has a few cables that could help:
Yaesu CT-167: connect pins 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 to the TT4 by soldering on a DE9 with the matching assignments as the TT4.
Yaesu CT-164: This would act as an adaptor to use with the Byonics M12 cable.
Yaesu CT-163: This would act as an adaptor to use with the Byonics M12 cable, but also give a DE9 connection for the PC control?

The best part of using the 10-pn jack is that the audio levels are fixed, and the radio speaker is still available to listen to.
You don't have to be very handy with a soldering iron to handle the CT-167 option, and it's a single cable.? You do need a matching DE9 to J1 on the TT4.

Robert,

I¡¯m new to the group after receiving several TT4 devices, and I am in the process of getting them ready for addition to our ARES go bags using the process you describe to modify settings.?

?

My question is with an older TT4, which I received from a Silent Key that I believe is about 10-years old. Using the same cables from the newer TT4¡¯s and software settings, my terminal program responds with a ¡°?¡± but nothing else follows unlike the newer devices.??Experimenting by switching the baud rate from 19200 to 4800 my terminal program responds with ¡°TinyTrak4 v4.05¡±. In both situations, there is no response to any keyboard input?

?

Do you have any idea what may be causing this?

Thanks?

V4.05 is a VERY OLD firmware.? I believe that version is "Tracker Only" (no KISS mode)
That means the Chip is Atmega 644 (not Atmega 1228).

I found a TT4TrackerConfig.exe for V4.07, but I recommend you just reprogram it with the latest Alpha V0.72.
The instructions are here:

No reason to save the current state, just update, run <RESTORE> to get the settings to factory settings for the new firmware (IMPORTANT!!). Then make the changes you want and save a copy.

Or you could use TinyTrak4AlphaConfigv0.68.exe file to upload the v0.72 firmware, and then reset it, <RESTORE>, and make changes as you desire.

Excellent Robert!? Thanks for your quick response and research.? I've now been able to reprogram it with the latest Alpha V0.72.

(BTW the chip is the older 644)
