Baofeng UV-5R / TinyTrak 4 - Configuration
Hello all - Rob (KEOMIC), trying to setup a digi using the Baofeng UV-5R and a TinyTrack 4.
I've perused the forum; and see the various notes about Baofeng not an optimal choice. However, I am not sure I want to spend another $$$ on a Yaesu FT60 or similar until I figure out the gremlins in this toy. Short version - it is currently a very nice receiver, not getting anything from the TinyTrak to the Baofeng. Here are some of my settings/configurations: Connected the Baofeng to the TinyTrack via the Byonics HTK2 cable. Under the 'hood' of the TT$: JP8 is 'open' JP6 is 'open' - no GPS module; entered coordinates for a 'fixed' location GPS Valid light does not illuminate.? Not much on the Baofeng has been tinkered with from the default settings: VOX on the radio is set to off (I've tried on/off); squelch is set I can get a "Carrier Detect" when my Yaesu FT3D beacons position; however never any Transmit indication. Software settings below (TeraTerm for serial connection). display

Well, a few highlighted things below: BPERIOD is 0 ?? ????????? Set this to about 600 for testing, this should generate a TX packet on power up ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? change it after you know everything is working
PPERIOD is 3600????? ? Set this to about 120 for testing, change it after you know everything is working PKTOCOM is FALSE?? Set this TRUE so you can see internally generated packets on an attached computer So, you will only send a packet ever hour (3600 seconds).? During testing that is an awful long time to wait! Since VOX is off, how are you expecting the radio to go into TX? ? I am not familiar with the Baofeng.? Does it have a dedicated PTT line, or is it coupled with the Mic input (meaning JP8 would be needed) That should at least get you to know if the radio is going into TX mode. Robert Giuliano KB8RCO

Thank you for the suggestions.
I should clarify, I had been testing with VOX in various settings; was not getting desired results, then went back to the VOX OFF. I updated settings per your recommendations and set my VOX - and it seems to be transmitting while in the basement. Now, I need to get it in the air to reach another digi. I feel like I am making progress.? :) Thanks again. |
Unfortunately still not getting ¡°out¡±.? it is transmitting now. Thanks to previous advice. But not reaching any local digi or gates.? My Yaesu FT3D is hitting a nearby spot. So, power, location are theoretically ¡°good¡±.? I know the rig (TinyTrak and Uv5) is transmitting because the FT3 picks up the beacon. ?That is the end of the line, no digipeats.? still scratching my feeble brain¡ |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIf you want the tt4 to be a digi you have to set ALIAS.?
