Re: Dead / Bricked Tinytrak 4

Next episode:

I soldered some wires to MAX202 pins going directly to the CPU. I then connected a TTL/USB serial converter to these wires and were able to go into the menu of the TT4 and here it is, no more garbage !
Removed the wires and gave it a second try using the regular DB9 connector J2 on the tracker, and .... it is now working fine !... So I guess the actual issue were cold soldering on the MAX202 and countless years in a car broke them...

Next step is to test further if this was really the cause of the issue.

Picture of the test setup.

Re: Audio receive level

You can use the MONITOR command, it will display numerical values of the input audio level.

Re: GPS question (TT4BT and APRSdroid)

--Thank you for the comebacks, gives me something to go on...I've only been using the TT4BT for about 2 months and all the tech knowledge needed is something I have not any training for. However I am learning a lot about firmware and binary mode etc...terminal software etc...I have gone through a lot of everyone's questions and picked up a lot of good info, very interesting stuff...thank you all...special thanks to KB8RCO...73's...

Re: Audio receive level

An interesting write up thanks for sharing it. I recently picked up a TT4 and I agree it would be good to have input level pot.?

I wonder if the software could display a VU meter of sorts to help with setting the volume as well??

double checked, it is the correct file....

Re: Dead / Bricked Tinytrak 4

Are you sure you are uploading the correct firmware for the chip in the TT4?
You posting shows bootloader Version 1.2c:
> The file tt4_alpha_v067_1284.TT4 is for ATMEGA1284P based TinyTrak4s with

Probably, but just making sure.

Allen,

I do not know where the reset Pin but after a couple of tries I managed to enter the boot loader. There are some garbage characters being sent.
Hitting v to get the version only returns garbage.... Let see if I can upload the firmware ....

Thanks for all the great information. Lots to digest. I will disconnect the GPS and see if there is an improvement. I do not recall the coax and GPS being close though.?

Good to know on the audio levels. I have the volume set pretty low but with the radio, that might still be too high! I have done all the calibration with command line tools and another radio - onthing scientific. I'd use a scope but the only ones I have need wall power so no way to get the engine interference. I will experiment with your suggestions!?

Re: Dead / Bricked Tinytrak 4

Geoff,

When you send the "B" while trying to enter the bootloader, what does the terminal screen show? Continuous dots? Anything? It can be difficult to catch the bootloader when you do a reset by just cycling the power. A "hard reset" by shorting the TT4 chip RESET pin to ground briefly will give you a better chance of getting to the bootloader?and reloading the firmware. It is not terribly likely that an abortive attempt?at reloading the firmware bricked the bootloader beyond repair.?

Hi Group,

I got my hands on this bricked TT4.
The person who gave it to me said it was exhibiting erratic behavior (bad decoding, not transmitting). At some point he tried to upgrade the firmware, and ended up stuck with the TT4 in this state.

When powering up it does not even show the boot loader message on the connected terminal. Any ideas ?

Audio receive level

Hi All,

Following topic drifted to a discussion about audio levels /g/TinyTrak/topic/95670230#1649
In order to not highjack the topic any longer I start a new one.

The topic above triggered me to finish an article I started a while ago about receive audio levels on the Tinytrak 4.

It would be nice to have feedback from other users.

Re: Not recieving packets when car is on

Allen,

?I think we are more or less saying the same thing and at the same time saying different things.
You are talking about the noise in the audio chain of the receiver, whereas I was more focusing on noise induced into the cables from the radio to the TT4.

?

I am tapping signal on the data jack but on the 1200bps output, the TT4 in my case had better decoding result with the deemphasis provided there.

Feature request with mtt4 line

I noticed that the two units I got shipped with ¡°test xx¡± as ID and when powered it will make transmissions with these fake setup accounts thus making an emission illegally I didn¡¯t intend.?

a feature request to disable tx via jumper or software so when new unit shipped it¡¯s not transmitting with no ID

You can see examples like looking up TEST22 or any other number on aprs.fi.?

some links to share hope they help. As Geoffrey mentioned might mess around with audio output.?

Re: Not recieving packets when car is on

If it is a question of decodability, it's largely a question of signal to noise ratios. Noise always increases with gain, so setting?your volume to "11"? is not a good thing, as it lowers signal to noise ratios by disproportionately adding noise, even though the signal may also get "louder". Ham radios are not exactly Hi-Fi -level audio.? People who have data jacks on their radios which tap audio right out of the FM discriminator will get much better results than those tapping their speaker outputs, and speaker volume directly relates to noise. Of course, if you had?a theoretically perfect,? noiseless audio stage in your radio, with full quieting between actual packets,? you could probably blast the TT4 and compensate for it with the TT4's audio settings. Most TT4 users will run their radios open-squelch, and there is always plenty of noise. One of the reasons?APRS works so well with everyone transmitting on their own schedule is that weak and distant stations are more often than not, not decoded.?

Re: Not recieving packets when car is on

Allen, it is a bad practice to keep the wanted signal as low as possible, in contrary to make it immune to noise you should krank it up all the way that the system can process, in this case 800mV. I also doubt that audio volume will change with power supply voltage, this would imply the audio circuitry is directly powered through the power supply, which is a poor design. But one cannot rule this out.
You may be right. What would I know about it??

Nice to see there are more and more people following my instructions for Bluetooth :)
Regarding the audio level, I once analyzed the TT4 schematic and found out that the best audio levels for proper decoding is about 800 to 900mV peak to peak on noise.

Do you have another radio you could test with? Or even an APRS enabled HT ?
