I am reading the chapter where catherine
explains about giving one tenth of your income to church OR 'spiritual work
or workers' or to the spiritually enlightened causes that have helped you
grow spiritually. Well, I don't go to church. The causes that have helped
me grow are seth, abraham, elias, and email groups such as these. So how do
I give or 'tithe' as she calls it in this case??? I thought about getting
the tape or cd a month or even week from abraham, but isn't that buying???
I have enjoyed reading Catherine Ponder's books and they are filled with
some great wisdom. However--she puts far too much emphasize on tithing--with
very broad hints throughout her books that we should send 10 percent of our
income to HER!
Catherine Ponder is a Unity minister, so of course she thinks people
should tithe their income to either churches or to her own ministry. It's
always amusing when metaphysical ministers who DON'T take the Bible literally
make an exception for that old tithing rule--because it's in the Bible!
Joseph Murphy, one of my favorite New Thought writers, said tithing
doesn't have to consist of giving ten percent of your income to a church. He
said you can tithe by giving joy, kindness and good will to others.
If you cook a nice dinner for someone who is under a lot of stress, that's
tithing. If you help a neighbor kid with his homework or give a coat to a
friend who admires it, that's tithing, too. And if you see a homeless lady on
the street and you give her $10 or $20, that's also tithing.
I think the idea that we must give ten percent of our income to a church
in order to tithe is passe. I prefer helping people in a more direct, personal
way.
Just my opinion!...........Patricia
