Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
Hello Chuck, I think you've misread the chart, at 50 MHz it shows the input resistance to be 55K ohms. Ken g8beq.

Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
Following the 2 pF cap C3 is a 56 pF feedthru cap, C4, to ground, so the capacitive divider is 2 pF/(56 pF + Q1 input C + C1.3 pF, in series with 2.87K). John

Re: Making a Q-meter / References etc
I'm just about to build a fixture for measuring Q with a VNA. One tricky bit I see is getting the coupling into the two sides of the coil the same. The paper Jacques Audet references

Re: Making a Q-meter / References etc
Thank you Peter. It has certainly extended my knowledge about applications of Q. I have a small collection of low frequency glass encased crystals. I must test a few and see if I can measure the Q

Re: Making a Q-meter / References etc
Hi: I've put the WE paper and Ring Down in a new paragraph. Origin of Q & Ring Down And included some calculations on ring down since the paper has the formulas.

Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
I put the HP4342A input circuit together for a better understanding. It has some tiny caps making up a capacitive divider before the FET gate of the impedance converter. The manual is a but

Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
Yes, I had no problem with the 260A, I was looking at the HP4342A. I did find I only had part of the RF amplifier in the paper I was looking at, it is missing Q1-Q4, the high impedance part plus a

Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
Correction to above sentence: * The premise of the measurement is that the numeric value of the ratio of either the voltage across the inductor or the capacitor at resonance, is the Q. If the voltage

Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
The VTVM is connected across the variable capacitor and the input of the VTVM is way up there impedance wise, up until around 50 MHz were Boonton designers decided the accuracy was no longer

Re: Making a Q-meter / References etc
Hi Pete: THANKS very much for that paper. I've placed the Johnson patent at the top of the patents on my Q-meters web page in honor of his being the father of the term "Q".

Re: Rise of Boonton's BR-535 tube (valve) for the 260 Q Meter
At one time I had got a socket to fit the 1659 tube base mounted a pcb and started eliciting help to design a circuit using modern ICs to replace the 1659 tube. I never came up with a working circuit.
