Tek 2430 Oscilloscope self cal not working
Paul Tech1
Hello, Im new to this group. I am also fairly new to Tek Scopes. I have recently aquired a Tek 2430 Digital Scope, with a fault. On switch on the self test comes up and all items pass. However there is a warning of Un Cal. So trying the self Cal, a Running display appears but goes no further. The system appears to hang at this stage. No traces on either channel , but on screen displays are there.
Going through the various menus all seems correct. Any direction on this please? Best Regards Paul? |
website Tekwiki.com After you boot up and it pass beyond Self Test screen you are most likely not in any type of scope error.? |

Hi Craig, thank you for the advice. I will try this.

I have the manual already and have been studying that. Strange how all the tests pass but no traces, the on screen cursors are there and the cursors appear too. The settings of the attenuators and timebase values are displayed also.? As far as I can tell, until the self cal is passed the scope will not operate. Also in Ch 1 mode, that are some vertical wide bars on screen but not in Ch2. Strange one!? Best Regards Paul?

Ok, further tests revealed that the self cal is definitely not completing. One initiated, the display "running" appears, but instead of running for approx 10 secs it stays running.
No errors or fails appear. Because no "pass" is achieved the scope won't operate. Manual states " return to qualified personel for service" in this case! What could this be? Kind Regards Paul? |
Paul,
Well used to work on those pretty regularly but now just have bunch parts and pieces waiting for me to reassemble. The 2430 is kinda not as easy to get thru without patience. You picked a tough one to start working on. Anyway now might be time to remove case and check voltage pins on the A13 side board to verify they are intolerance. Anytime the case is removed and powered up you must use a fan to blow are across the main board. It doesnt have to be a big volume of air just enough to diappate the heat off hybrids.? I looked in my manual and found a note I wrote and it says. ?Self Cal wouldn't work, Finally tracked it down to U440 Hybrid Peak Detector. ?Lots of 7130,7400 diagnostics. ?I know you arent having diagnostics just wanted to pass my note I made in my manual.? Can you confirm if it is a 2430 or a 2430a and the serial number? On Mar 25, 2023 2:51 PM, "Paul Tech1 via groups.io" <godleypaul@...> wrote: Hello, Im new to this group. The 2430 and 2430a have battery backed ram. Either with a static ram memory with a Li cell or a Dallas nvram with internal cells. If they are dead, the cal will not complete. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Craig & Tom ? Checked the LI cell, it seems healthy at 3.7V. There is a large 1 Farad cap that¡¯s ok too.? Strange no fails showing on start up. Self cal will not complete. On initiation, the screen goes blank and the +/_ alternates on the trigger section. Then returns after about 10 secs or so to the extended diagnostics screen. But still uncald. Looks unmolested inside, but what a complex scope!? Craig, did you have errors that led you to suspect the U440 chip? ¨C A RAM Chip? ? Kind Regards ? Paul ? Paul, There is pretty good thread about ?the same problem you are dealing with. In the Search box type, ? ?TeK 2430 Saga It goes thru many steps some good and others had to be redone multiple times. ?You really need a stable DC power supply that can help you go thru some external cal steps voltages just to help during digging thru this. ?Its just +DC voltages not Square waves.? In my notes I didnt find any other details ?except what I tracked down on the one I was working on. That was the old way, Today I make notes on everything I check and end results. ?I highly recommend you do this so you can look back at what you¡¯ve done.? If you dont get the extended diagnostics page loaded on bootup. Dont try Self Cal or get concerned about UnCal. ? ?Select channel 1 and then push Aquire button , After that turn the CH1 position CCW then CW to see if you get a trac? on the screen. ?? Did you check voltage test points on th A13 side card? |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Craig ? Appreciate your kind message. Yes I have just looked at the other group and as you say there is a lot of help there too. I will be trying this out. ? Yes this is the first Digital scope I have had experience with so it¡¯s a learning curve. I suppose the good this with the one here that the extended diagnostics is showing all passes. Yes I do get the extended diagnostics on start up too. ? I do have a good power supply so will delve into the scope again shortly. ? Many Thanks For your help. ? Kind regards ? Paul ? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello again Craig, ? I need to ensure that battery I was looking at was the right one. Is it a small square cube with ¡°keeper cell¡± printed on it. This was on the second lower board. This read 3.7v. or is there another one which the manual refers to a BT1800? Where is that located?it not clear from the manual. Looking at some of the posts it seems the battery could be also the cause of this problem possibly> ? Kind regards ? Paul ? I was read in the forums you suggested and a 3.6v 1/2 AA wired ended is mentioned which I think is different from the keeper battery? Is this on the LV board? Kind Regards Paul?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello ? Just an update on my 2430 scope. Further investigation has revealed that both input channels appear to be dead. In Ext Cal mode the triggers and RPLT pass perfectly, but during the sequence for the Attenuators, nothing happens. It does not detect that there is a cal voltage at its inputs. I tried a Cold Start setting, this produced an error from the Nvram. Carrying out the EXT cal again brought this back and I could then access other settings on the scope, but no trace appeared. Still the scope would not go past the first Voltage (0.2V) on the Cal for the Attenuators. No other faults, everything is passed. ? So looking closely at the input side PCB, it looks as someone has been there before. There are markings around the fixing screws on the heatsink amplifier modules for the channels and I wonder if the hybrid modules could also be suspect on the input sockets. What¡¯s the best way forward on this? A pity really as the scope is in very good cosmetic condition and the CRT seems fair. But if its going to be an tricky and expensive job, I may have to think again! ? ? Kind Regards ? Paul ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Paul Tech1 via groups.io

Paul,
The amount of labor and possible spare parts to bring back a 2430 may just not be worth it, I'm sorry to say. I would opt for a high serial number 2430A (B030xxx, even seen B042xxx) and in good shape. These go really cheap on ebay (I've seen less than $100), especially if not working and the high s/n ones it is usually the power supply. The high S/N 2430A's will have the latest version of CCD (-05) and you will avoid many issues with the older CCDs. In my experience 2430A with CCD before? -03 will be problematic, so forget the 2430. --Victor |

Thanks for the advice, I think you are right, especially as there is evidence that someone had been there before me. These scopes and other Teks are more expensive here in the UK and spares are not easy to obtain. The situation is much better in the US. Thanks Paul?
