A cautionary tale ...
I have acquired a Tek 2225 as a 50MHz analogue alternative to my TDS744A
but before I powered it on I took the case off to make sure nothing had shaken loose in transit (I make that a policy for mains powered stuff). Everything was OK but I did find a loose screw rolling around in the PSU area !!! I am very glad I gave the thing a "once-over" or I would have allowed the "magic smoke" to escape !!! I seem to remember someone else finding loose screws. One place I worked always played an air line around the kit before putting the covers on looking for surplus/dropped screws and other rubbish. BTW I'm very pleased with the 2225, works nicely and is a bit more portable than the 744A.? I'd have preferred a 2235, but I may get one of those as well - just don't tell the wife !!! ;-) Now at 5 and counting ;-) Dave |

Although it is difficult to know where your "spare" screw came from please make sure that the rear right hand side case screw ?is present, it is part of the power supply heat sink path and is frequently missing. 73 George G6HIG On Saturday, December 8, 2018 12:57 PM, David Slipper <softfoot@...> wrote:

Sometimes I do a "shakedown". All angles and shake shake shake. It'll get things out that compressed air won't sometimes. Sometimes I had to do it on some rather large TVs which might require help, but on most scopes and other equipment of the same general size and weight it works fine.
Thanks for the reminder BTW, I have lately come to the conclusion that much of what I work on has been gotten into before and who knows how the last guy left things. |
Mine actually has 3 in that position - I had assumed that was their

Once I was done, put it back together, went for a test drive to make sure all was well.. and it was... for a few minutes. Then out of the blue, magic smoke escaped from that scope that was working just fine a second before ! Turned out to be a loose screw in the PSU... I guess I must have dislodged it while working on the scope, argh... well at least it was an opportunity to work on these 22XX PSUs , learn about them and get some hands on experience... made fixing the PSU of a later acquired 2215A, incredibly easy and fast. So I try to see the bright side of things.... Vincent Trouilliez |
