Hi again Yes the crt dose work , scope did turn at one time , but PS needs work , i bought with the notion of fixing but i have so many other scopes that needed work that i never got to fix .
Pay pal is what i have and what i use for internet transactions . I will try to see if i can use power supply from other scope to power crt and take picture before i send to you so you can see for yourself, just need some time to make that happen .

I had some bad wire wrap sockets in a Chyron Video graphics system for our
stations Mobile Production Van, in the late '80s. The sockets were under
hundreds of very tight wire wrap wires, so I bought good quality machine pin
sockets and pressed them into the wire wrap sockets. It cured the problem,
without replacing that expensive backplane. It would have taken weeks for us
to unwrap everything, replace the two bad sockets and replace each wire. The
original problem was caused by ICs with defective plating on the pins, and
they had contaminated the cheap sockets used by Chyron. Two new ICs with
better plating finished the repairs.

I still have a few of the headers (they are in hiding, somewhere) for when
there is no replacement for a chip with bad plating. I simply straddle the IC
header and solder the IC pins to the header.

is the style I used to repair the Chyron.
This listing is for Augut, which are good quality.

Michael: I gotten round this by plugging in a 14 or 16 Dip CAMBION
header in place of the removed special chip.,
The CAMBION has either solder lugs or turned pins on top depending
on model. Turned pins are best for this
I soldered a piece of strip board on to that, shaped to fit without
fouling nearby parts when plugged home
Then soldered the approp sockets to the strip board to take the
corresponding IC's making up the equivalent circuit.
then plugged the header into a socket replacing the original.
Done this with a couple of Tek Plug ins so far and they are still
working fine years later...and I can still get the parts!!!

Cheap and quick to do I assume you can still ger Cambion's headers or
equivalents. If not you could solder suitable pins
onto the strip board direct to match the boards IC

The original problem was caused by ICs with defective plating on the pins, and they had contaminated the cheap sockets used by Chyron. Two new ICs with better plating finished the repairs.

I still have a few of the headers (they are in hiding, somewhere) for when there is no replacement for a chip with bad plating. I simply straddle the IC header and solder the IC pins to the header.

is the style I used to repair the Chyron. This listing is for Augut, which are good quality.

Michael: I gotten round this by plugging in a 14 or 16 Dip CAMBION header in place of the removed special chip.,
The CAMBION has either solder lugs or turned pins on top depending on model. Turned pins are best for this
I soldered a piece of strip board on to that, shaped to fit without fouling nearby parts when plugged home
Then soldered the approp sockets to the strip board to take the corresponding IC's making up the equivalent circuit.
then plugged the header into a socket replacing the original.
Done this with a couple of Tek Plug ins so far and they are still working fine years later...and I can still get the parts!!!

Cheap and quick to do I assume you can still ger Cambion's headers or equivalents. If not you could solder suitable pins
onto the strip board direct to match the boards IC

I remember that TEK does not recommend hot insertion of modules in
equipment. Part of the problem is that if the connectors are not
aligned properly from the very start, adjacent pins can short at the
very beginning of the process, yet be correctly aligned when the
plugin is fully and properly inserted.

With no plugins, if the TM506 main fuse blows, then there's a nice
short somewhere. Obviously, if the fuse doesn't blow with no plugins,
and then blows once a plugin is inserted and power is applied, I'd be
looking at that plugin. A good set of extenders can be a very nice
addition.

As far as the PG502 is concerned, I'd check the capacitors down line
from the fuse. I'd also check the major capacitors in the PG502 just
as a matter of course, if you have an ESR checker.

You are correct, TEK does not recommend "Hot swapping". I do not do hot
swaps. The short is definitely in the PG502 as it blew that fuse on the TM506
as soon as power came on. With a full complement of Six functional plugins,
(Excluding the PG502) there is no problem with the fuse. I am confident that
the TM506 is good to go. Remove PG502- replace fuse-all is well. Others have
also focused on the caps as well, so that will be a good place to start.

I have been getting some e-mail help from Dan Meeks and I have found several of the nagging issues that have plagued this device. I have some signals, but have not restored complete function.

In order of repair:

Replaced F645
Removed, tested and re-soldered Q650, this was also not bolted down to the board, So it was running much hotter than normal. Replaced the missing nylon hardware and secured to board.
Tested electrolytic caps and replaced C304 which had considerable leakage.
Located, Removed and Replaced blown "Crowbar" Q626.
Set 15V to EXACTLY 15 V Voltage was set too high @ 15.86V
Checked -20V and found it to be -20.022V
Checked +5V and found it to be +5.16V
Replaced blown "Power On" incandescent lamp with an LED.
Cleaned/inspected cam switches.
Replaced C424 which was standing with one lead in the air.
Checked VCC @ U150-U180-U260-U360-U400 and U480, all voltages and grounds seem fine.
Swapped U150 (156-0282-01 MC1660L) with U180 (same part). (This is where the big change happened).
Before this swap I had no output from the main output and I had a ragged Trigger out signal only with the period switch set to 4nSec position and the pulse duration set to SQ Wave (INT Period).
After this swap, I have a signal from the Trigger in 4 nS as well as a square wave from all other switch positions. I also can vary the period of the signal, but still cannot control the duration of the signal. So things are looking up, but not totally fixed yet. THe trigger/duration input also does not appear to work. probably something with Q125/Q130. I think what I need next is a Known good 156-0282-00 or 01 to replace the known bad U180. Then I can continue testing for other flaws. This OR/NOR GATE is long obsolete, so anyone out there that has one and who would part with it, please feel free to let me know. Further to the issue I described in my last post, I installed a new battery and the erratic operation has not occurred.
I still have to few tests to do but I now suspect that the battery charger isn't working as this also supplies power
to the RAM chips even with no battery installed, so with no supply to RAM this could be the cause of the erratic operation.
