Re: Tek 475 repair/restore questions
-
Before tearing into everything, I would start out by putting the scope into X / Y mode, ( make certain that the intensity is turned down), and checking that the spot can be positioned all over the screen. Then use the probe adjust signal to verify that a H & V line can be optained and that the lines and be positioned properly and that the volts/dev switches are OK.. The manual will show you how to setup X / Y operation. I have never owned a 475 but I have had lots of experience with the 465 & 465B and these are well known for sweep problems caused by the tunnel diodes. RTFM on everything connected to both A & B triggering. You may be able to find some combination that will trick the scope into triggering a sweep, I know that I usually could even with bad TDs. There are lens polishing kits in automotive stores for headlines lens. If the plastic is compatible, it might work

The sliding plastic dust cover on the rear of the Tek 496P was difficult to slide, so I sprayed some silicone spray to lubricate it. While the spray freed up the cover, I noticed that it had become clouded. Checking the can of silicone spray (CRC Heavy Duty Silicone), I noticed that it contained ACETONE!! It's incredible that a product to be used on "nylon, rubber, metal & non-metal surfaces" (as stated on the front of the can)would contain this harmful chemical. I have used silicone spray for years on just about everything and the silicone spray can in my garage (different brand) contained no acetone. Having learned a painful lesson (ALWAYS READ THE LABEL), I'm glad I didn't spray it on anything on the front panel!! Does anyone know where I can obtain a replacement for this part? I can't find a reference number for it in the Service Manual. Is there a better name for it than "dust cover"? Is it possible (feasible) to polish it off? Thanks Harv W1BMY |
Tek 7S12 TDR plugin for trade
Hi all,
I picked up two 7S12 TDR plugins for my Tek 7854 scope on eBay. I checked them both out and they're fine. I only need one and would like to trade the other for any of the following plugins that I'm looking for: S6 sampling head S52 pulse generator head 7B87 time base 7D15 225MHz frequency counter Also, I'll be working on writing some modern software for the Tek 7854. I'm leaning toward a USB to GPIB or Ethernet to GPIB interface so I can use a laptop instead of a computer requiring a PCI slot. Do any of you have experience with these units? or If I go with the Ethernet model, it would prevent the need for any custom drivers to be installed, any computer with network access would be able to talk to the scope (or any other GPIB instrument chain) and not be limited to the 5 meter USB cable spec. Thanks, and I apologize if this is not the proper forum for trades. -Bob |

Re: Tek 475 repair/restore questions
The group can reply if they disagree, but I would start with the power supply. Make sure all voltages and ripple are within spec. Everything else depends on the power supply working correctly. If you read the archives you will see filter capacitors are a prime suspect for problems in the power supply, although other parts can fail.

I'm a new member needing some advice on where to start with a 475 o'scope that doesn't display a trace signal and when I use the beam finder I can locate a stationary dot for both channels. I do have a copy of the service manual for this scope as well as a copy of the troubleshooting guide for these Tektronix scopes. Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Large Batch of new Tek Ceramic Terminal strips + Mod kits
wshawlee2
There have been a few requests here for Tek ceramic solder strips, and
I got one big batch of 7 slot parts (124-0158-00)), brand new in factory bags. There are pics and more data here at the start or the parts index: There's 40 parts, and they are $2.50 each. Let me know if any interest. We also got a large lot of new 050- mod kits from Tek, with instructions and parts for all kinds of units, I will try and post them up as soon as I can. There are new attenuator boards for the 475, 7A19, etc. and many semiconductor upgrade kits. all the best, walter sphere research corp. PS: I will be in Toronto from monday to friday, so if I am slow to answer, that's why. |

About all you can do with a sweep generator is use MAX HOLD, and be patient

Re: 496P Spectrum Analyzer
Any suggestions for using a Wavetek 2002B sweep generator as a trackingThey are not really compatible, since there's no way to synchronize the Wavetek's sweep to the spectrum analyzer's. The Wavetek is intended to be used with a broadband detector such as an HP 8471 series crystal detector. |

I think the Tunnel Diodes (typically used in the trigger circuit)
would be worth keeping. They seem to have a finite lifetime and can be difficult to find.
