Wing build
Ok everyone I¡¯m about ready to start my build and I¡¯ll be starting with the wings while I continue to practice my welding. I¡¯ll be starting with the ribs. My question is, is the aircraft spruce ¡°spruce kit¡± what I¡¯ll need to get going? A different or better source? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Yes I have the plans and I even have the Stanton plans I ordered a couple years ago.? |
The Stamsta kit has the tip ribs and the rib jigs for both sets of ribs last I looked... Sent from my Pixel 5a On Fri, Mar 7, 2025, 10:15?AM Steven Becker via <S_07_BEC=[email protected]> wrote:

I¡¯m a little late to this thread but I thought I would chime in. I purchased mark¡¯s kit. The jigs are nicely done to build the ribs in. If you purchase the kit make sure to wax the daylight out of the jigs with a good carnauba wax. The wax will help make your jigs last longer. When I was finished building the ribs all of the parts fit together as I expected. Your spars are all cut to size. His kit is slightly different from Steve¡¯s plans. On the last outboard full size rib he does not skin the rib on both sides with a full covering of plywood.?
on the inboard taper of the wing near the fuselage I thought my leading edge profile is much blunter than the rest of the wing. ?I may change that just for cosmetics.? I purchased my plywood from a boat restoration shop in Minnesota. The price was good and I was close enough to just pick it up. The kit is not cheap. If you are the person who enjoys putting a puzzle together you can choose to trade dollars for convenience. For additional effort you can purchase cap strip and plywood and cut out your own gussets, mill spars, build your jigs and build the wing.? note: ?I was strongly encouraged to plywood skin the outboard rib on both sides.? |
Sorry for the late response guys. Yes I did contact Mark and had a great conversation with him. He is up to his eyeballs in the Howard and warbird things. He does have some stock for his kit and I have some thinking to do. My son is up near him in Madison so I might just head on up for a visit and maybe get a few hints and skills from him. Food for thought. Thanks for all the responses. I¡¯ll keep you updated when I pull the trigger.? |
