Zoo and panda/other animal info
I am thinking about a trip to the National Zoo to see the new pandas. If anyone is interested, let me know. I'm thinking of a Saturday or Sunday (because traffic will be much lighter then). Maybe the end of April. You have to have reservations, not only for parking but also for the entrance to the Panda area. Please let me know what days you are available (as early as possible because they fill up fast. Please let me know by the end of March). Meet the giant pandas on Jan. 24, 2025 Having problems viewing this message? View in browser Welcome, Bao Li and Qing Bao On Oct. 15, history was made at the Smithsonian¡¯s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute as we welcomed Bao Li and Qing Bao¡ªour new giant panda ambassadors¡ªto Washington, D.C.! Their 19-hour, 8,250-mile trans-Pacific trip aboard a dedicated ¡°FedEx Panda Express¡± Boeing 777F aircraft took them from Chengdu, China, to Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia. From there, it was a short drive to the Zoo, where fans cheered their arrival. At the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat, Bao Li and Qing Bao eagerly explored their habitats. Qing Bao made quite a splash in her new pool, and Bao Li tested out the new climbing structure! ¡°We¡¯re thrilled to welcome Bao Li and Qing Bao to Washington, D.C., the only place you can see giant pandas for free in the nation,¡± said Brandie Smith, the John and Adrienne Mars Director of the Zoo. ¡°I am appreciative of our Chinese colleagues for our collaborative conservation and research efforts, to FedEx for providing them with safe transportation and to our donors and members whose philanthropic contributions makes our giant panda conservation program possible. As a result of our collective efforts, today we joyfully celebrate a new chapter of our 52-year-long giant panda breeding and conservation program.¡± Watch Them Explore Get To Know The Pandas Male Bao Li, pictured on the left, was born Aug. 4, 2021, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) in Sichuan, to father An An and mother Bao Bao. His name means ¡°treasure¡± and ¡°energetic¡± in Mandarin Chinese. Bao Li has a deep connection to the Zoo. His mother was born here Aug. 23, 2013. His grandparents, Tian Tian and Mei Xiang, are beloved in the Washington, D.C., area, where they served as ambassadors for their species for 23 years. Female Qing Bao, pictured on the right, was born Sept. 12, 2021, at CCRCGP, to father Qing Qing and mother Jia Mei. Her name means ¡°green¡± and ¡°treasure¡± in Mandarin Chinese. Qing, her father¡¯s name, evokes the lush and mountainous habitat where giant pandas roam in the wild. Bao, which means ¡°treasure,¡± reflects that she is cherished by all who know her. Pandas return to National Zoo!
Lots of links about the new pandas! There is a National Zoo connection with Bao Li the 3 year old male panda. He is the son of Bao Bao, the 2nd cub and 1st daughter of Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, the National Zoo's long time (23 year stay) panda couple. That, of course, makes Bao Li their grandson as well as the nephew of Tai Shan, the National Zoo's first ever surviving cub. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/14/world/video/pandas-china-washington-smithsonian-zoo-ldn-digvid https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/10/14/national-zoo-cams-pandas-habitat/ https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/14/china/china-pandas-coming-to-washington-intl-hnk/index.html https://foxbaltimore.com/news/local/dc-pandas-smithsonian-national-bao-li-qing-bao-washington-china-express-flight-tracker-mandarin-chinese-dujiangyan-research-center-fedex https://www.mor-tv.com/article/china-panda-diplomats-national-zoo/62609604 https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/giant-pandas-begin-their-journey-to-dcs-national-zoo/3719706/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjHfiCV70VE https://www.washingtonian.com/2024/10/14/its-happening-pandas-are-on-their-way-to-the-national-zoo/ https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/china-panda-diplomacy-bears-national-zoo-washington-rcna175238 https://www.wusa9.com/article/life/animals/pandas-return-to-dc/65-94a3354d-1ca7-476d-8b92-210871e5372e More later!
