[TCS-decoders] To Administrators: why am I still on moderated status?
2
Scott Walton shares: “I joined this group on 5/13/23. To my knowledge I haven't posted any objectionable material.” “I went to post a comment on the "Multiple JMRI Servers" topic a couple of days ago and got a response that "my message would appear after it was approved by the moderators" and it doesn't seem to have appeared.” Many groups are set up so new members are moderated until they submit a post relevant to the group’s charter. When that first post is reviewed and released for posting, the member is taken off moderation. Moderators are all volunteers, so sometimes approval is delayed until one of the moderators has time to review and approve. Was the recent post your first, if so, this may explain the delay in posting your message. Best regards, Steve Steve Haas Snoqualmie, WA

Will TCS consider making BLI adapter boards?
2
Just saw a fellow club members BLI big boy locomotive that he had installed the esu adapter board and ESU decoder. What an improvement over the bli electronics. It retained BLI's smoke unit and even offered more lighting functions than the factory BLI decoder. I have done many TCS swaps into BLI locos but I loose the smoke function and for me I would like to retain the smoke if possible Would TCS ever consider building one? Regards Trent Blasco

Multiple JMRI Servers
12
I just got a new UWT-50 and used it for the first time today, worked great but I did run into one problem that could cause problems in the future. I'm running at a RR museum and we have multiple JMRI servers serving different layouts and all on the same WiFi network. When I booted up the throttle is found the WiFi network and I entered the password. It then saw one of the JMRI servers and connected to it and it just happened that it was the one I was planning on running on so away I went. However, I searched the menu system but could not find anyway to switch JMRI servers. Read thru the manual and no information and nothing on the TCS web site, so I'm stumped. Previously, I had been using an iPhone running WiThrottle and on that app there is a menu item that lists all JMRI servers on the network and allows you to select the one you want. Can I do that with the UWT-50 and if so how? Thanks, John Moonan

Very abrupt speed changes using 28 speed steps
39
Hi, I'm new to the group, and greatly appreciate you all being here. I did some searches in past posts, but nothing popped up that was the same issue I'm having. I have several TCS DCC decoders in Kato and Atlas N Scale Locomotives. Most run really well and really smoothly. However, in my SDP45 with a K7D4, every time I make an increase (or decrease) in speed (e.g., from 2-3 or 3-4, etc), the locomotive "jerks" right up to that next speed level. It is very noticeable when watching it, and if it is in consist or pulling a train, you see it even more. I have quite high momentum settings (CV3 and CV4 set to 75). I use 28 speed steps. I would expect it to go smoothly up/down to the next speed step, but that does not seem to be the case. I have compared the CVs that I assume might impact this to other locomotives, and they are the same/similar. I do have BEMF enable with CV61=1. Any thoughts on a CV I need to check into or other possible causes? Bad board? Thanks so much! Bryce

Setting UWT throttles to default to yard mode.
19
Is there a way to set the UWT throttles to yard mode? I always use yard mode with my UWT-50 throttles. But if a throttle powers down, upon reboot it turns back on in non-yard mode. So instead of the acquired loco being at O, it’s at 50. is there a way to have yard mode persist on shut down and start up? -- Heath @ Human[c]ity http://www.humancity.org http://www.riversidetransfer.nyc

LT-50 + CS-105
5
Hello, I didn't want to hijack the other thread but I saw a mention that the LT-50 could be used as a dedicated program track for the CS-105. I had looked through the settings a while ago and the CDI descriptions seemed to insinuate that was possible. I tried a while ago and couldn't get it working. Since I now know its possible i decided to give it another go. Hopefully somebody can point out what I am doing wrong or what is causing the results I am seeing. Devices/Software: My CS-105 is on firmware version 2.2.1 My LT-50 is on firmware version 2.2.1 My UWT-100 is on firmware version 3.4 My RR-Cirkits LCC-Loconet Gateway is on version B8h My JRMI is 5.10+Rca461bd266 Topology: I have my CS-105 connected to the LCC-Loconet Gateway. The gateway is primarily just acting as a USB interface for JMRI running on my Mac, no Loconet is connected. The other side of the gateway is connected to the LT-50, with terminators on both ends. The LT-50 wired throttle is connected to the "LT" port of the panel and all of the jumpers on the panel are NOT set. The output of the CS-105 goes to two PSX circuit breakers and each one feeds a loop. The output of the LT-50 connects to a small isolated section of EZ-track for testing. Configuration: The CS-105 has the program track disabled: The LT-50 has Drive DCC Accessories and Drive DCC Locomotives set to disabled and Program Track Access is set to program track only: Issue: The LT-50 wired throttle is able to see the roster of the CS-105 just fine and run locomotives. When I use DecoderPro to add a new locomotive and click "read type from decoder" the screen on the LT-50 will go blank (backlight still on) and the LEDs on top will begin to flash. The Track On LED on the LT panel goes a dim green and then turns red for a moment before going back to the normal green when the throttle comes back to life. DecoderPro return an error "Stopped due to error: Unknown error (307)". I attempted to use a UWT-100 (connected directly to the wifi of the CS-105) and when I try to read a CV using the program track I get the same results, only instead of the DecoderPro error the UWT-100 returns "Read Failed 0x81000". I repeated these steps with two different locomotives to make sure it wasn't a decoder issue. I left a locomotive running on one of the loops and it never stopped during any of this process. In my experience with the UWT-100 usually the screen going blank and the LEDs flashing is a crash. An observation I made is that with the LT-50 independent of the CS-105 with default settings I am able to program these locomotives just fine. I started changing a few setting and when I disabled "Drive DCC Locomotives" I get the same symptoms as when connected tot eh CS-105. I went through a few combinations changing one setting at a time and rebooting the LT-50 in between and every time I disable Drive DCC Locomotives I am able to replicate the issue. I disabled Railcom on the LT-50 just in case but it didn't seem to have any effect. But independently of the CS-105 I am able only able to program on the LT-50 is Drive DCC Accessories is enabled. The Programming Track Access works in either automatic or program only. But as soon as I disable Drive DCC Locomotives and reboot I see the symptoms I described previously. Is this perhaps a bug? I assume that Drive DCC Locomotives is a must to be disabled on the LT-50 when connected to the CS-105, otherwise they'd probably battle for control. Hopefully that information is useful, let me know if you need me to provide or test anything I haven't. Thanks!

New ESU board : is it TCS compatible
7
ESU has released a new adaptor board. ESU 53952 Adaptor board - NEM660 21 MTC integral connector to BLI steam paragon 3 & 4. Many folks are asking if a TCS 21 pin sound decoder can be used with this adaptor board? Some say with NMRA standards, any 21 pin decoder may be used. Others say, no because ESU has engineered the board, that it works with their decoder only. I would like to use a TCS 21 pin sound decoder with this board. Does anyone have a definitive, concrete answer? Thanks....John

Turnout routing best practice?
12
I will be converting my yard turnouts over to Sprog ServoIO LCC control. A single TCS 105 drives the layout. Since I’m starting from scratch how would you recommend setting up the routes? 1) set up the routes via TCS macro’s. I’m assuming I set up the route with event id’s from the servo io board and trigger the macro from an input event? 2) set up multiple servo events in the servoIO board? Not sure how to do this yet. 3) iether one will work because LCC is so versatile! ? -- Kelly R. Regan Georgetown Branch Model Railroad FullScale Home Inspection

[TCS-decoders] [TCS-decoders] Setting UWT throttles to default to yard mode.
Stuart Baker responded to my previous comments: “I'm a bit puzzled here. While I agree that "yard" mode is not prototypical in terms of simulating what happens in an actual locomotive cab, there are nearly zero throttles that provide an actually prototypical experience. The ProtoThrottle is the only commercially available product that I'm aware of which provides a uniquely prototypical like experience (for specific EMD locomotive models).” “Yard Mode”, at least in many systems does little or nothing to contribute to the feeling of switching in a yard. There’s much more to spotting a car than suddenly stopping, reversing direction and then backing up. A whole amount of railroading gets left out: setting brakes on the spotted car if needed, time for the ground crew to climb back up on the engine, etc., to say nothing of acceleration and deaccelerations. “While I see nothing wrong with the ProtoThrottle, and I think it is a awesome edition to the hobby, not everyone prefers it over a traditional (non-prototypical) throttle. Why do you care if I or anyone else enjoys operating in a different way? Personally, I prefer comfort over being strictly prototypical, especially for long operating sessions. For comfort, I feel that the UWT throttles are second to none, including when using yard mode.” I’ve used the ProtoThrottle on at least three different layouts – I love it, I hope to have one of my own someday. But, it does take some time to get used to, including the owner’s ideas of appropriate momentum, which isn’t always mine. Without a lot of time in the engineer’s set using the throttle with a specific loco’s decoder settings it can get frustrating in a hurry in the middle of a busy op session using it. Ideal for use on one’s home layout where one has the time to practice and learn, not so much for use during a busy ops session without the necessary experience. “Yard mode is not a feature that is new with the introduction of the UWT throttles either. Many prior throttle designs have implemented a similar option. The reason that the UWT product have this capability is that users asked for it.” Truth – it’s been around a long time. I love the ProtoThrottle, I dislike “Yard Mode” . . . . It’s about as enjoyable as playing Tetris and nowhere near the actual simulation of prototype switching operations. Ops is not a speed or numbers game, despite some folks using “trains run” or “cars switched” as a metric of success. “...so in summary, if you and Roger enjoy operating differently, that's great. Everyone in this hobby deserves the opportunity to have fun and operate in a way that they get the most enjoyment out of.” Rule number 1 always applies you do it your way, I’ll do it mine. “Why must you criticize someone else for wanting to do it differently? Why should any of us be sad about having lots of personal choice in how we operate?” I’m not criticizing the individual, I’m calling out the practice as something purely “model trains”, and not anywhere near what happens on a real railroad. "L" or "S" after loco number?

Option for a twin cross compound sound?
Hello. I am a new user of TCS and setting up a DCC decoder in general and I'm wondering if there is a way to set up my wow steam v4.6 decoder to have a twin cross compound sound effect? Thanks for any help.

[TCS-decoders] Setting UWT throttles to default to yard mode.
7
Roger Thomas shares: “Sadly, yard mode is not particularly prototypical. Have never seen a real loco throttle that moves the engine forward in one direction and reverse in the other. Maybe on some small short line?” “Yard mode” is a term for a quaint method of controlling a switcher during switching operations that never had a counterpart in the real world. Roger is correct, no real locomotive behaves like that – there’s no reason we should be propagating that behavior in our operations. Best regards, Steve Steve Haas Snoqualmie, WA

Rookie question... locomotive lights in MU?
8
Hi all, I've noticed that when I try to consist multiple locomotives together that I cannot seem to get the trailing locomotives lights to remain off or not respond the lighting commands I intend for the leading locomotive only? For example, I have 3 locomotives in a consist an I end up with all 3 having headlights on or off whenever I try to change the setup. The locomotive I intend to have lights on is designated as the "lead" in the throttle, but it seems to make no difference. Wondering what I might be missing, because I'm sure it's an operator error issue that nobody else has. Thanks in advance! Sean

Where can I find the sound files for the Wow101 diesel decoder and question on consisting with T1 decoders
6
My locos are hardwired to T1-Led decoders with 9 pin JST connector. I'm considering the purchase of two sound decoders and would like to hear the sound files for the Wow101 decoder. Where can I access the samples to review? Also, I've read that Wow101 decoders do not consist well with TCS (or other brand) mobile decoders. I'm mostly concerned with consisting with T1's. Is this true? Is there a workaround? If so, where can read about the workaround?

Loco not responding to forward, reverse or speed when programmed
4
Hi sorry for this novice question but i am stuck. I fitted a T4X decoder, programmed on program track, manufacturer and decoder read correctly using NCE procab. When loco put on main track just takes off in one direction, does not respond to direction or any speed control. Help please, cheers. Rodger

UWT Auto Power Off Setting
3
The UWT throttles have an option to change Auto Power Off and Display Off settings. Does anyone know what the measurement of the setting is? For example, Auto Power Off defaults to 15. How many minutes is 15? If I change it to 100, how many minutes is that? Can this information be added to the throttle docs on the TCS site? thanks -- Heath @ Human[c]ity http://www.humancity.org http://www.riversidetransfer.nyc
