Family Search 1950 Census 2
If you go to https://www.familysearch.org/getinvolved/1950 you'll see a map of the US and which states are ready to have indexing done. The states with diagonal lines are not ready. Some of the white states are ready and some aren't. All of the other states are ready to some extent. I click on Texas and enter a surname. A census page will be returned with at least one person with the request surname. You are asked to review that family. The system selects small sections of that family to be review working across the page. When you completed the review of the family you save it and then you are given two options: finish the page or go back. Of course you can always close a page if you don't want to do anything else. Remember, you MUST accept the invitation I sent you for your indexing to be included in the TAGHS project and you MUST have a Family Search account. If you need a new invitation or if you aren't sure if you accepted the invitation please let me know. I'll check. Thanks. Have fun Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX

It is time to start
We can now start indexing 1950 Census records. To have your work counted as part of the TAGHS group you must respond to the last email invitation I sent. If you haven't done so and want me to send you another invitation please let me know. To start indexing go to https://www.familysearch.org/getinvolved/1950 Scroll down to the US map and click on a state you want to work on. Yes, I know there aren't many states listed yet. I clicked on Idaho and enter Barrett as a name to work on. I selected the first family listed and their system walked me through each field for each member of the family. Give it a try. If you have questions I'll try to help. Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX

1950 Stuff
You can find Enumeration District Maps here https://stevemorse.org/census/arc1940-1950edmaps.html The National Archives 1950 census is here https://1950census.archives.gov/ You can make corrections to their index. I have found my family, Jan's family and my mother's mother. For my grandmother I didn't find her with their search so I searched for a neighbor. I then found my grandmother in the index. They made such a mess of her name no one would ever find her with the search. They have her as Haftenofilia, it should be Holden Ophelia. Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX

Fw: Volunteers Can Contribute to Nation’s History by Collaborating on 1950 Census Records
I still haven't heard anything from Family Search but I did receive this from the National Archives today. I plan to sign up for this project, but will switch to Family Search when and if I hear something from them. Thanks. Jim Barrett - Timpson, TX ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: National Archives <public.affairs@...> To: James <parino@...> Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2022, 09:59:53 AM CST Subject: Volunteers Can Contribute to Nation’s History by Collaborating on 1950 Census Records The 1950 Census launches on April 1, 2022 and you can help! Volunteers Can Contribute to Nation’s History by Collaborating on 1950 Census Records By Editorial Staff | National Archives News WASHINGTON, February 22, 2022 — When the National Archives and Records Administration releases the 1950 Census records on April 1, 2022, people will have the opportunity to make a direct contribution to the nation’s history by participating in a transcription project to help improve accuracy of the records. The National Archives used an optical character recognition and artificial intelligence tool to extract the handwritten names from the 1950 Census population schedules and provide a first draft of the name index for public use. Members of the public can help refine the name index for better accuracy and easier access to the records, using a transcription feature that will be available on the 1950 Census website. “We are calling on the public to assist with making the name index for the census more accurate by helping to refine the first draft of the names that have been created through our digital tools,” said National Archives Chief Innovation Officer Pamela Wright. “We are asking for volunteers to assist with transcribing those names that were unreadable or misread by the technology.” People interested in making a contribution, or those simply looking forward to exploring the 1950 Census records, can sign up here to get updates and for a reminder to join the transcription project and contribute to our nation’s history on April 1. Currently, the National Archives is in the final stages of testing a dedicated 1950 Census website that will feature a name-search function, along with the previously mentioned transcription tool. The 1950 Census website will always be available at no cost to the public. In addition, the full 1950 Census dataset will be available for bulk download on a separate download site . Offering this level of access to the public will encourage the development of websites and applications that could present census data in a myriad of ways. “NARA holds these census records in trust for the public,” said Chris Naylor, National Archives Acting Executive for Research Services. “We look forward to seeing how the public creates their own products from the bulk download functionality, and especially how users collaborate and contribute to improving the name index to make these records as accessible as possible to more people.” Explore!
