Star Hoppers Guide to the Galaxy free book 364 pages 5
Dear TAAS: Go to the website URL below (it's safe) and download the Star Hoppers Guide to the Galaxy free 32MB PDF book that is a whopping 364pages long with hyperlinks. An incredible guide to deep sky objects. There is even a 27-minute video describing the book. I watched the video first just to see what was what. Obviously, my first choice of reading materials for the new observer is still NightWatch by Terence Dickinson. This new 4th Edition was a worthy follow up to my aging Edition from the way back machine. Still a free 384 page PDF complete with star charts is an ambitious project. A lot of the materials come from Mazur's outreach handouts. The book is well thought out. Naturally my book won't stand up to the Maid of the Mist efforts to make all my ink run off the page but in daylight or indoors, it is quite impressive. John Sillasen Contact Name James Yoder Email: jty.astro@... Subject: Free Astronomy PDF book Message The Star Hopper¡¯s Guide to the Galaxy is a free PDF book created for astronomers in the northern hemisphere who do not have a GoTo telescope or are interested in finding objects using the star hopping technique. The book along with additional resources can be downloaded from the ArtCentrics website at https://artcentrics.com/books/ The book primarily consists of star hop instruction sheets developed by Jim Mazur that were initially made available on his website Skyledge.net. This compilation contains over 170 instruction sheets with over 250 objects. Each sheet contains two star charts; the first chart is used to help orient you to the night sky and immediate area around the target using familiar constellations or asterisms such as the Big Dipper, the Summer Triangle, or the Great Square of Pegasus. The second chart is a detailed road map on how to hop to the highlighted objects. Information on the targeted objects is provided, as well as a small image of the object, when available. The book is organized by constellations and the targets within the constellation. Each constellation has a page that summarizes the targets in the constellation along with a table listing basic information on each of the objects. The table includes the name of the object, the type of the object, links to the finder chart (within the book, and on the Skyledge.net website), aliases for the object, and some basic stats such as magnitude, separation (in the case of multiple stars), surface brightness, and size. A chart highlighting the constellation is also provided on the page along with online links to Wikipedia articles where more information on each of the targets can be found. The constellation summary page is followed by an image gallery where images for many of the targets are provided for reference. The book was specifically developed to be printed out so it can be taken out in the field. One can print out sections as needed, or print the entire book and place it in a binder or have it spiral bound. Additional functionality is available when utilizing the book on a PC or smart device such as an iPad. Many links with additional information are available throughout the book with the purpose of providing in depth information either in preparation of a viewing session, or additional research after a viewing session. The book is copyrighted under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 law, so it can be freely printed and distributed provided there is no profit involved. We think this book will be a valuable tool to help the observational astronomer have a productive viewing session. James Yoder, Andrea Matthias, Jim Mazur

Fw: The Sun coming to you June 10
? Here's another 'class' or webinar from Dean Regas, author, podcast host and educator from Cincinnati Observatory. He's the author of a highly illustrated book I actually recommend. How to Teach Grown-Ups about Pluto. Also, 100 Things to See in the Night Sky. I have the Pluto book. Its quite entertaining. Lastly, the download ASGH member, Greg Shanos post last week (I'll send to TAAS separately), The Star Hopper's Guide to the Universe, is a 384 page PDF. One of its collaborators is ASNH member, Jim Mazur. I print the whole thing double sided in color to bring to outreach events. I took the print out to a local UPS Store and had GBC Binding done. I dropped it off at the UPS Store around Noon and picked it up by 3 PM same day. I had document binding done once with another hefty printed document - I think it was the SharpCap Manual. Took that to Staples. It was ready 3 days later! That one was spiral bound. I wanted to see the difference. I kind of like the UPS Store GBC binding better. Both will lie flat for ease of reading but the difference is a plastic binding in GBC & metal wire with the other. I think. Its been a while and don't know where it is at the moment. Reminder Saturday is Our Largest Night of Public Observing at the Van Vleck Observatory! 2
This Saturday is Commencement Weekend at Wesleyan University. As such it is also our Public night. It is our largest attended event of the year! Even if it's raining we will have 100 guests come through to tour the observatory. Many of you have already committed to attend so consider this a reminder. For those who have yet to commit, please consider attending and bringing a telescope if it's clear. If it's cloudy or raining we will still open. There is no canceling this one! We are already listed in the Wesleyan calendar for Commencement Weekend for Saturday night from 9 - 11 PM. Those who have already, ahem, 'pledged fealty,' (oh have I been watching strange TV), I have: Marty Dean Chris Cyndi John & myself. Definitely have room for more. Because parking is premium & it's been awhile since I got vehicle and plate information please send me the vehicle you will be driving and the license plate # so I can give it to Public Safety. Public Safety and Parking Authority have been asked to cordone off Lot O specifically for our use but that doesn't stop everyone. Especially the "I have donated a lot of $$" you know the type. Most people are super pleasant and understanding If we see them. Some of us are already committed to a solar observing outreach all day Saturday so it's possible we may not get there super early to protect our limited parking assets. Do try to arrive early and remember your parking passes for your dashboard! If you lost them just print up one: ASGH VOLUNTEERS FOR VVO That will do on an 8.5x11" paper at 38 point! Thank you! I definitely look forward to seeing you all again on Saturday!

May Meeting Synopsis 4
I did not take detailed minutes for the TAAS meeting held on Zoom which began at about 7:05pm on Tuesday May 15th, but did take general notes which I will share here. There were six members present, Gerry, John, Max, Lee and myself. Among the topics discussed was the impending observing session scheduled by SAS for this Saturday the 17th. It look likely, due to weather conditions, the session will be cancelled but the official proclamation will be done tomorrow after the latest weather forecast. The following SAS session is scheduled for July 26. We discussed the next Hammonasset session on May 31st and also decided that those present were OK with the August meeting/picnic being held at Waterford Beach Park Pavilion. Gerry and I discussed the latest paper on the Double Slit experiment which indicated that dark photons may be a viable solution to the interference pattern as opposed to the classical wave function. As an actual physicist, Gerry had some valuable insight into the short paper and I¡¯m sure more information will be forthcoming from the researchers. I thanked Lee for updating the website and Lee added that he hopes it generates additional club members. Jeff said that his wife, a climate scientist, confirmed my anecdotally based suggestion that New England skies have become more challenging for viewing in the evenings due to the increased water vapor in the atmosphere. The group also discussed the massive number of satellites including Star Link, that are polluting those rare clear evenings. Jeff also mentioned his latest refractor project and indicatd he will start a construcion topic on our groups.io <http://groups.io/> site where we can give advice and offer surplus items he may find useful in his build. John offered some suggestions as did other participants. I have to apologize to the group as I was wearing my noise cancelling headphones when a phone call came in and voice mail left, which I suspect was broadcast over the Zoom meeting. You can¡¯t choose your family or when they call, but next time I¡¯ll ditch the phone from my desk. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and seconded by John and Max at 7:05 pm. If I have overlooked anything significant, please feel free to offer additions or corrections. Thanks to all who attended and thank you to Gerry for setting up the meeting for Zoom. George

Homemade Mount - Older Version
In tonight's TAAS meeting, Jeff Dunn was expressing interest in making a mount on the "cheap." I suggested tracking with an EQ mount for his 6" Refractor project. I have 2 photos here. My entirely photogenic Astro-Physics Mach 1 on their Eagle Pier with their 92 mm Stowaway in the foreground sporting a Baader Planetarium Herschel Wedge. In the background is Dick's older generation tripod and tracking EQ mount for his 10" Classical Cassegrain. One with and without the scope. It should help identify some of the components w/o the scope on it. At least the gear is highlighted as is the tripod. I'll try and find something with just the mount and the Refractor for you. SeeStar Flat Calibration is Finally Here!
For those who have the Seestar S50 or S30, there is a new update that has been released. Flat calibration is now in the menu under Expert mode. Flats are absolutely required to remove any artifacts that may be on the glass surfaces - whether on the sensor or the scopes glass, a Flat image, taken with a couple of layers of white cloth such as a pillow case or T- shirt, undershirt etc. 60 second exposures in Equatorial mode absolutely require Flats! These intelligent telescopes are getting up to real imaging trains work flow now! The Space Koala YouTube channel has a short (17 minute) how to video to make the work easier. Seestar FLATS and 60 second Shots Are FINALLY here! Seestar FLATS and 60 second Shots Are FINALLY here! For those who really want to get the most out of their investment, this is the way to go. Plus it only adds about 2 minutes to your work flow. Seriously - just 2 minutes. John Sillasen
