Catherine Kolnaski STEAM night
2
Mark, Gerry K., and I manned the TAAS table, Mark¡¯s 60 mm refractor, my Seestar 50, and Gerry¡¯s Lund 80 mm solar scope tonight from 5-7 pm at CKMS. According to CKMS staff around 400 attendees came through the door. Using the handy-dandy counter Jeff & Shoreline provided (from the Chester Fair last year) at least 170 hands (and fingerprints) landed on Mark¡¯s refractor and Gerry¡¯s Lund. A few wanted to ¡°look through¡± the Seestar but I held them off and pointed them to the image on the iPad of Gerry and/or Mark outside at the solar scope. ? We handed out lots of Night Sky Network NASA stickers and other NSN swag. We had one woman say she was sending in her membership application as soon as she got home. Keep an eye out George! April Meeting Minutes
6
Sorry for the delay in getting the minutes out. We had family in Vermont the weekend after the meeting (Easter for those who celebrate) and we got distracted with teaching grandson Wilder (3) to ski. ? NOTE: TAAS has committed to having a table at Catherine Kolnaski STEAM night THIS Tuesday, April 29, from 5-7 p.m. They would love us to have a solar scope there,if anyone is available to provide guidance for observing. Mark and I will staff the TAAS table inside. The TAAS table plan is to have a small telescope, the Seestar, and membership applications. I am also going to try and find a fun Night Sky Network activity to have available, also. MINUTES BELOW! TAAS Monthly Meeting Minutes April 17, 2025 Present: Mark S., Deb F., Lee P., George B., Alan S., John S., Gerry K., Leslie B., (RM) Max, Jeff D., Brian R., Jerry T. Mark attended the ASGH meeting on Wednesday night via Zoom, and he enjoyed the meeting and the presentation on the new planetarium in Stamford. Mark asked if everyone had reviewed the agenda. Lee remarked he added an agenda item regarding Shoreline¡¯s May 17 event. It is a town sponsored event. Jeff will share more information when he gets the official flyer. No dogs are allowed. 8:30-10:30 p.m. Mark called the meeting to order. He reminded everyone of the agenda he had sent previously. The last item on the March agenda was a discussion about club growth based on an article Mark had read in Reflector Magazine. The discussion in March was cut short due to lack of time so Mark put this as the first agenda item for the April meeting. The three primary methods of growing your club were: ¡¤ Outreach ¡¤ Social Media ¡¤ Leadership turnover Mark felt we were doing well with outreach. Lee mentioned he thinks we do a lot with young people at the schools, Hammonassett, and Avery Point. He felt those events reach young people, tourists, and the college students. He was wondering if there were other things we can do to attract adults, who are more likely to become members. He suggested library events. Mark and Leslie mentioned TAAS does two or three events a year at the Waterford Library. Lee wondered about putting more posters/flyers in schools and libraries. Leslie mentioned the East Lyme high school planetarium (supported by the Stars to STEM organization) is planning to do beginner level astronomy programs once a month on the last Saturday of the month, starting April 26 from 7-9 pm. Leslie would love to have TAAS support these programs. The first Friday of each month they are doing laser light shows with live music. Mark asked for a motion to go forward with getting brochures and flyers for the libraries and other public locations. These would include membership forms. Max-motion/four seconds. John brought up having a tri-fold brochure with one-fold being the membership. Deb commented we already have a brochure with one-fold being the membership application. Deb emailed a pdf of the brochure to everyone and asked for suggestions of any changes to make as we are almost out and will need to make more copies. John suggested that the groups.io is going to reach capacity. Leslie suggested that if people have not been active in a year, perhaps they should be removed. George suggested that although lots of people may want to look through our telescopes, the number who will join, get a telescope, frequently check the Clear Sky clock, observe with the group, and go to NEAF is rather small. John asked if George could include a membership application when people email him with questions. George will do so. Jeff chimed in about how SAS has grown their club from 8 to 32 members in a year and a half. They also gained their 501(c)3 status. They have club telescopes, are active on social media for anyone who wants to learn more. Social media is also their advertising and marketing. They save their groups.io for members and club dynamics. They recently rolled out a PayPal on-line membership. Jeff suggested Mark¡¯s intention with this discussion is to try to poll the club members to determine what members of the club want to see for the

Messier ¡. Uhh Walk?
2
Well we tried, but the CT weather didn¡¯t cooperate. Tonight¡¯s CSC for Propbusters shows some improvement in cloud cover after dark, but would probably not support a Messier Marathon. I¡¯m planning on going to Alan¡¯s Trail 53 session if you want to try and observe tonight. Arriving 7:30-8:00. TAAS members welcome. Monday night¡¯s forecast looks better. Anybody else want to try then, too? Mark

Weekday Observing
6
As expected, the conditions last night were poor. Seeing was bad as was the transparency here in Quaker Hill. However, I took the time to set up and felt obligated to look at what was not hidden by trees. I grabbed about 25 Messier objects, a few NGCs as well as Mars and Jupiter over a two hour period. Tonight looks similar, but I¡¯ll wait until dark to decide whether to bring the stuff in or give it another go. George

Hamden Solar Viewing more site info

Public works has blocked off the back end of the parking lot for us, so you can enter where the "Do not enter" sign is because it's blocked off for the program. In terms of handouts, I think we'll just stick to what you have to hand out. It looks so far like the audience for the talk portion of the program is going to be pretty small, but I've heard interest from families with kids who are school age in looking at the sun once they get out of school so I hope we get a fair amount of people!

Friday's What's Up Webcast is on the PI Finder with the founder of the device
5
For all you Dob owners and those without GoTo telescopes using Push To no tech, this is the non-encoder device you didn't know you needed. I learned about the PI Finder sometime last year. It's a small Raspberry PI or smaller device that can be purchased as a kit or even 3D print at home where you install all the electronics or as a completely finished device. It weighs less than a RACI (Right Angle Correct Image) Finder scope or about what a Tele Vue Delos weighs. It mounts in a finder saddle with an included dovetail. The device immediately impressed me. I'm looking forward to learning about Version 3 and why the kits are only at version 2.5. In a word, it's fantastic looking! The new version 3 is faster and like all Pi finders are encoderless! Fully assembled it goes from $485 - $535. The difference being on board battery or external 5V USB-C powered. In kit form the prices range from $15 for the unpopulated circuit boards to $65 for the 3D printed parts and so forth. The kit version builds the v.2.5 of the PI Finder. I'd go with the built version myself. It's still less than a Nexus fully loaded. Or the Tele Vue system. The encoder kit is less then $300 but the whole pod to install it with the encoders is nearly $2000. I like the Nexus DSC Pro. At $385, it's a decent device if you have the room to mount it. It is a one man shop in Australia. Solid product but right now there's no one that will take over for him. I asked him that question and he said he has 15 years before he can retire. The PiFinder is available in right hand, left hand, flat and straight through for refractors and SCTs with the eyepiece/focuser at the back. With this episode having the Founder speak about the product, it's an excellent opportunity to learn about the products and ask questions. That's always the best part of having a live speaker! I got to hear a presentation with the Nexus DSC developer at a club meeting in Hawaii. As the maker is in Australia it was the closest time zone for a talk! For me it started at midnight! The PiFinder website is here: PiFinder PiFinder PiFinder is an open-source, all-in-one telescope pointing solution. Works like digital setting circles, but without encoders or alignment using plate solving technology. Works with any scope, and mounts just like a finder! PIFinder is out of Sacramento, CA and ship everything via USPS Priority Mail 2 Day delivery. What's Up? Webcast: Richard Wolf-Jacobson, Founder of BBlabs/PiFinder What's Up? Webcast: Richard Wolf-Jacobson, Founder of BBlabs/PiFinder If you are still pushing any of your scopes to find an object and have considered an encoder system like Sky Commander (now retired and no longer available), this product is something to consider and I encourage you to attend live, Friday at 1 PM ET on the Sky-Watcher USA YouTube channel. John Sillasen, your gadget geek or as one member once called me, Inspector Gadget.
