Re: Event: TAAS Monthly meeting. - Thursday, April 17, 2025 #cal-reminder

I would truly like to participate in tomorrow evening's meeting, but with clear skies forecasted and so few of such nights lately, I'm afraid I'll have to be outside with my scope.? But if this fact should cause any possible rescheduling of our meeting, I will attend.? (thought it was worth a shot? :-)

Re: Late Announcement! JWST/Cosmology talk today at Conn College

The room for today's talk may be moved to Fanning Hall 101. Check both when you arrive. Let me know if you have any questions. -LB

Hi Folks,

I am so sorry that I didn't send this invitation to you earlier. I hope a few of you can attend, but I understand that this talk announcement?was sent very late. Anyway, here is the information.

Talk title:?¡°Monsters in the dark: searching for the origins of the most massive galaxies in our universe¡±

Speaker:?Dr. John Weaver, graduate of the Williams School 2013.

Date:?Wednesday, April 16.
Refreshments:?4:15 - 4:30 p.m.????Talk Time:? 4:30p.m.
Talk location:?Fanning 111

Talk?Description:?Despite a century of observations, the origins of the most massive galaxies in the nearby universe remain elusive. Although much progress has been made, the details of their formation have been lost to time. Thankfully, telescopes are time machines, which means we can catch their progenitors in action in the distant, high-redshift universe. However, these galaxies are also extremely rare, forming in only the greatest collections of dark matter and cold gas. While this makes them ideal cosmological probes, observations capture only snapshots of different galaxies at different redshifts and cosmic epochs. Accurately piecing together this grand story therefore requires large statistical samples from the most sensitive infrared telescopes covering the widest areas. I will present our latest efforts to chart the formation and evolution of the most massive galaxies in our universe, taking us back to the first 500 million years after the Big Bang.

I hope you can join us this afternoon! Best,
Leslie

Hi Lee,

Sure, why don't you swing by tomorrow, Sunday, anytime after noon to 7pm will work. Send me a text (860-961-377) to give me a heads-up on when you might arrive.? I'll have the PSF and mount ready for you when you arrive. Today, I am? setting up the 100i and to see if it will behave as advertised - a good rainy day activity. Fingers crossed that we will get some clear nights soon.

Re: A few questions:

Re 1-
You should plan for the Marathon without regard for the land trust session. We¡¯ll be fine. Clear skies is everything. You¡¯ll be miserable if you move it to the 26th but only the 25th is clear. Non-marathoners will carry the water 4/25, even if it¡¯s just me.?

and anyone who wants to set up here on the 25th with the intention of pulling an all nighter is welcome to do so. No one will get chased out. But at a minimum the first 5 or so objects will be obscured at dusk and I don¡¯t think M30 could be caught before dawn. I haven¡¯t inventoried what might be below Polaris either.?

You have my urging to do what is best for the Marathoners.?

Fw: [asgh] Fw: (sovera:announce) SoVerA Monthly Meeting April 8th 2025

?(sovera:announce) SoVerA Monthly Meeting April 8th 2025
Not sure if I remembered to send this to the group or not. It was a very long weekend not just working at NEAF but the horrendous drive back and forth in the rain at night with heavy traffic.? Fortunately, its was 2 hours at best. An hour and a half in the morning so that's favorable.?

Tonight's SoVerA meeting will have a talk on "The Edge." The expansion of an Infinite Universe.? The speaker is Erik Schmitt who you may recall spoke at our January meeting.? He's quite talented and a very good speaker.?

The Zoom link is below and begins at 7 PM ET tonight!

John Sillasen?

Subject: (sovera:announce) SoVerA Monthly Meeting April 8th 2025
Please join SoVerA on Tuesday April 8th at 7:00PM Eastern for a presentation by Erik Schmitt. This meeting will be virtual-only via zoom at?.

This month's talk is entitled "The "Edge" of an Infinite Universe which is Expanding?" We will walk through a series of thought experiments and discussion intended to provide some tools to effectively grapple with the topic and answer common questions such as "What is the Universe expanding into", "If the Universe is infinite how is it getting bigger", and "Is there an edge?"

Erik Schmitt is currently serving as the treasurer of SoVerA. He previously taught physics and astronomy and was the director of the Perkin Observatory.

Yes, Leslie!? Always a pleasure to see you :)? ? Shiny new toys?? ? I had my eye (pun intended)? on a 22 mm Ethos eyepiece and an adjustable coma corrector from Nagler.? ?At almost half? price? they were hard to resist.? But, with cash only required,? my ATM card did not work there!
? ? ? ?There was also a 16" truss tube scope from Explore Scientific that interested me.? More portable and a larger mirror than my aging Odyssey.? ?
? ? ? ?In hindsight, since I am a strictly visual observer, and my travel schedule is allowing me so few opportunities to observe, its probably best I didnt drop big money on those items.? ? Huge sigh.? ? ?
? ? ? ?My son and I had a great time tho.? ?We attended two seminars. One on the search for life on other planets and one on the Apollo and Artemis space programs.? We both especially enjoyed the former.??
? ? ? ? How NEAF has changed since I first attended many years ago.? ?Sooo many options for Astrophotography now...??

Jerry, Alan and I went yesterday. We ran into Leslie at the Skywatcher booth. Got a chance to meet some of my favorite You Tubers and still managed not to spend any money. We heard that John had an open wallet, so can¡¯t wait to hear what he got :)
