Re: Conn College 20" optics
George, I was chatting with a couple of guys at NEAF, at least one of which who had a hosting site in NM and did telescope bulbs/installs. I will look into costs and ask the folks at AAVSO who have already done this for their organization to see how much money and effort it might take. If we built a remote site, perhaps as a joint endeavor with Jeff's club and ours, I know I would use it a lot, but would other club members? The biggest expense might be the monthly hosting and wifi connection fees. Working on it... slowly, but with forward motion. LB Maybe, I could even get Conn College to kick in some bucks to acquire telescope time - data from a clear, dark sky site is very useful. Re: Conn College 20" optics
Oh cool! How do we get the land shipped here and where do we put it?

Re: Conn College 20" optics
CT needs an astronomy park.
perhaps a multi club initiative to acquire a dark sky site that allows members spontaneous access? I believe there¡¯s a model for this in NJ, the United Astronomy Clubs of NJ or something like that.

Lee, Propbusters is not an option.

They've already refused any inquiry for even a shed. The last we discussed we wanted to make a portable possibly tertiary scope out of the existing optics. John

Re: Conn College 20" optics
If we could purchase a small piece of land in a darkish location, then, yes, we can build our own club observatory. Maybe if we can contract to use land in one if the local land trusts in exchange for public observing events. We could even set it up to run remotely. If we did that, we might want to think about putting the Taas scope at a site in New Mexico or Arizona.? Let's do it. Don't wake me, my dreams are so nice.? Thanks, Leslie. I hadn¡¯t thought of this until Jay mentioned it, but even a trade for something of value the club could use would be nice. Of course, my initial view that some local group could use the optics for an observatory would still be appealing to me. I guess we can be thinking about this and discuss it at the next meeting.

Re: Conn College 20" optics
Hi Gang, I have no problem with the club selling off the 20-inch. I would hope that the proceeds would make their way back to TAAS's account, but if that is the plan, then I am down with it. Leslie On Sun, May 25, 2025 at 9:10?PM Jay Drew via <mirrormaker=[email protected]> wrote:

Conn College 20" optics
Hi! This has been on my mind as I am planning on trying to sell off some of my glass horde at the Stellafane Convention this July. I wonder if the club would be interested in selling the 20" OPM Ritchey Chr¨¦tien mirror set? I probably wouldn't schlep it up to VT but could advertise it there if we wanted. Jay |
Re: Good article on public outreach in S&T Magazine
I was scheduled to be in Maine that weekend but I¡¯m going to try to stay here if the forecast looks promising for that event. ?I always enjoy those.?
