Re: All systems look to be go...

I've even set an alarm clock and that's quite rare for me to get up early to make New London for 10:30 AM!? I'm barely up by that time normally.

Re: Nagler Type 7?

Jeff, I have a 7" Maksutov.? It's not out of reach if you go with a Sky-Watcher USA version.? I had to get two the 1st came with a cracked primary!!! Their packaging certainly isn't the quality stuff that Astro-Physics uses! My dealer at Woodland Hills certainly gave the Sky-Watcher rep a big piece of her mind. Truly it's a lovely scope for lunar and Planetary observing and imaging.? It tends to like simple eyepieces like their brand LET, which is a modified Ramsden. It likes Plossls and Orthos but not Naglers! Oddly, it worked with Ethos for some odd reason.? Maybe the type 7s will work too.
The 7" Mak cost me less than the Tele Vue TV-85 I bought at the same time!

Don't give up hope unless of course your waiting on making one or one of those highly shiny machined ones. Then again, go for broke! The Astro-Physics 10" Maksutov is $22,000 made to order.? Don't try to put that on a Sky-Watcher mount!
(PS why can't I think of the name of that American made machined, shiny Cassegrain and Maksutov makers? They do or did have a 7" Maksutov telescope? at one time. Doing a search just comes up with the same cheap brand names. I even put in American made and still get Celestron,? Orion, Meade and Sky-Watcher! Companies may be US but none are made here.

All systems look to be go...

Hi All,

I am just confirming who is coming to Conn tomorrow, 2/10, between 10:30 and 11a.m. to help with removal of the primary and secondary mirror from the 20-inch. The people who I believe are showing up are George B., John S. and Scott L. Am I missing anyone? I would like to get an accurate? head count so that I can get donuts for the work crew in the morning before I come to campus. After we assemble and decide the best plan of action, I'll work on getting lunch from Mr G's for all us workers.

Parking on campus. Because of the snow last night, parking may be more problematic than usual, especially since folks in the work party will be arriving during the day when classes are in session. Any spots that say Visitor parking should be fine to grab if any are open. If you are force to part in the visitors' lot on the South end of campus, and you don't feel like walking up the hill, especially if you have a lot to carry, give me a call and I will come pick you up. 860 961 3577

Thanks,
Leslie

Re: Nagler Type 7?

19 mm eye relief is especially valuable for eyeglass wearers.
I do wear eyeglasses but tend to view with out them. As I have had variable astigmatism,? Al was trying to properly 'size' their astigmatism products.? I ended up buying several sizes but sharing views with friends doesn't make that an accessible accessory. If you pardon the alliteration.? Within the last year I have exercised my eyes and corrected with lenses, I can now achieve 20/15 vision in both eyes. So now if I want to truly enjoy the space walk especially with the 110¡ã AFOV of the two highest power Ethos, the 4.7 and 3.7, I am trying to get in the practice of wearing my spectacles.
I do find it useful to focus the eyepiece at public observing with my glasses on. If I can achieve best focus then most people can view through the scope without having to change focus. Those that need to, well, we teach them to use the fine focus first.
I have the 21 & 13 mm Ethos as well, Alan. Very fine optics indeed!

Re: Nagler Type 7?

AFOV and eye relief.
85¡ã vs. 100¡ã AFOV and the new was have 19 mm eye relief.? I don't recall what the Ethos have, but you can easily look that up or know it already from using them.

Tye 7s are nore Nagler plus than they are Ethos. You'll recall the Space Walk ads for Naglers and their 82¡ã AFOV, right?

Just a little more filling a niche where they were no type IV or VI.
The pics show them looking like the Apollo 11 Commerative Eyepiece too.? I suppose that's part of it.

I doubt you'll see any in the scratch and dent sale at NEAF this year is my guess.?

Re: Nagler Type 7?

Oh man, I¡¯m not going to be able to resist these little pieces of astro jewelry. I¡¯ll start with the 19mm, which will slot perfectly into the f/15 achromat I¡¯m finishing. But I¡¯m sure I¡¯ll end up with all of them by the fall. Can¡¯t wait for Stellafane where Al often passes new goodies around for people to demo.?

Funny, I¡¯ve been thinking that things have been quiet at TeleVue for some time now, since the tragic loss of Paul D. I¡¯m glad they¡¯re back in the design studio.?

Awesome Leslie, sounds like a great plan, and I shoulda known that you would have all the little details taken into consideration! Thanks, Jay

Fw: Latest Tele Vue Blog: Nagler Type 7 Eyepieces Introduced for 02/07/2025

I missed this in my email yesterday. The Tele Vue Blog announcing the Type 7 Nagler Eyepiece. Of course Mark is keeping me on my toes again.

So here's the tale of the Type 7:

It's a natural extension of the Apollo 11 commerative Eyepiece.?
They have 85¡ã AFOV with the eye relief of a Nagler Type IV's 19 mm.

The Type 7 will come in 19, 14, 9, and 5.5-mm choices.

Read on for more but that's the short and long of them.

Nagler Type 7 Eyepieces Introduced

By TVO Staff on Feb 07, 2025 04:00 am

The Nagler Type 7 series was developed as a natural extension of our highly regarded, 85¡ã, limited edition Apollo 11 eyepiece. However, the series can also be thought of as an extension of the long eye relief Nagler Type 4 concept.

Re: Reading for removal of the primary and secondary from the CC 20inch RC

Hi Jay,

Sorry to disappoint, but the mirror cell goes with the company, removing the 'scope.?

We, that is, Conn Astro, is keeping the camera, filter wheel, and all focusers and eyepieces. We are also holding on to the new Icron Ranger :D, as well as mush of the instrument cabling.? We have a C8 finder scope to donate, if you would like that. The spider goes with the secondary to TAAS/Stellafane/Last Green Valley, as does the primary.

The Astrometrics paddle is going back to Astrometrics Instruments. Chris Houghton says he has a customer who still uses an old Skywalker/S-Box telescope controller, and he will pass the Skywalker paddle on to that user. I may also give him the salvageable parts of the old S-Box system as well.

The STV has been promised to John Sillasen.

I do have two old Optomechancis paddles that you, or someone, can take, if anyone can make use of them. Motors may also be had, but not until the riggers/removers come and take the mount and OTA away. On that day, once the scope is ready for crane lift, someone could remote the 30-year-old motors. That is when we will be taking the S-Box and Skywalker part off.

See y'all on Monday!

Leslie

I¡¯ll read the manual later for this info, but just in case will you please measure the exact distance between the primary and secondary mirrors? In the past I have also recorded the distance between the attachment bolts from the mirror cell to the spider mounts (along the tube). This measurement can be helpful if we can keep the mirror cell, spider, and secondary holder. It would be wonderful if we can!

In fact, it may be easiest to leave both mirrors in their housings rather than dismantling them.?

What else is salvageable? Focuser, finder, heaters, etc? I doubt we¡¯ll be trying to get the motors, gearing, and Astometrics control system but¡it¡¯s a thought.?

Thanks and have fun, Jay

Re: Reading for removal of the primary and secondary from the CC 20inch RC

Oh, also the baffles that are usually part of the mirror cell. Thanks!
