I was scheduled to be in Maine that weekend but I’m going to try to stay here if the forecast looks promising for that event. ?I always enjoy those.?

It’s been a horror show for land trust events too. This Friday coming up will be yet another. Depressing.?

Yes. ?Unfortunately true, Amy.
Despite the risky forecast, 14 TAAS and SAS members showed up at Salt Meadow last Saturday. ?Maybe 5 or 10 objects got observed between the clouds, but it was great to see our members, meet new ones from SAS, sit, and chat. ?We started on Astronomy, then diverged in many topical directions. ?I had a couple of stacking white plastic chairs in the car which were an inviting chance for others to rest their feet and visit. ?I plan on bringing these to future events.
With so many public events clouded out, we should again consider some sort of alternate activity for future events.
  • The Night Sky Network has many canned astronomy presentations we can use.
  • Allow attendees to bring their unused/broken/new telescope for guidance.?
  • Resurrect Carl’s Constellation of the Month.
  • We can find games, discussion topics, slide shows, etc. targeted to the expected audience.
We may have to bring our old projector and a screen, or use the facility’s equipment. I suggest we plan something for the Hammonasset event next weekend.?
Thoughts?

Thanks, John. It seems like we schedule a bunch of outreach events but most are canceled due to poor conditions. Very frustrating.?

Re: Reminder Saturday is Our Largest Night of Public Observing at the Van Vleck Observatory!

My apologies,? TAAS. I don't know how the TAAS email got into my list to email. Of course you are all welcome to attend. Parking will be a premium this weekend but the attendance will be electrifying!? All the grads, parents, grandparents and alumni will all be in attendance.

This Saturday is Commencement Weekend at Wesleyan University.? As such it is also our Public night.?
It is our largest attended event of the year!? Even if it's raining we will have 100 guests come through to tour the observatory.?

Many of you have already committed to attend so consider this a reminder.? For those who have yet to commit, please consider attending and bringing a telescope if it's clear. If it's cloudy or raining we will still open. There is no canceling this one!? We are already listed in the Wesleyan calendar for Commencement Weekend for Saturday night from 9 - 11 PM.

Those who have already, ahem, 'pledged fealty,' (oh have I been watching strange TV), I have:
Marty
Dean?
Chris
Cyndi
John & myself.?

Definitely have room for more.

Because parking is premium & it's been awhile since I got vehicle and plate information please send me the vehicle you will be driving and the license plate # so I can give it to Public Safety.?

Public Safety and Parking Authority have been asked to cordone off Lot O specifically for our use but that doesn't stop everyone.? Especially the "I have donated a lot of $$" you know the type.? Most people are super pleasant and understanding If we see them.

Some of us are already committed to a solar observing outreach all day Saturday so it's possible we may not get there super early to protect our limited parking assets. Do try to arrive early and remember your parking passes for your dashboard!

If you lost them just print up one:

ASGH VOLUNTEERS FOR VVO

That will do on an 8.5x11" paper at 38 point!

Thank you!? I definitely look forward to seeing you all again on Saturday!

We had a torrential rain here in Meriden that lasted a full 3 ok maybe 4 minutes then completely subsided. Go figure.? Cloud cover prediction goes until 4 AM..

Trust no one but your own eyes!
So glad you had a decent turnout and representation.?

Thanks Jerry - I actually used a mask and applied HDRMT to the Orion Nebula to bring out the core a little better. I really need more time on this to get a better image.

Hey Lee,
?
That's a cool photo!? I've never before seen the Horsehead/Flame with the Running Man and Orion nebulae all in the same shot.? Too bad they're of so dissimilar brightness levels that they're impossible to all expose correctly in the same image.? I'm sure that can be corrected using masks in an app such as Photoshop, but it would be a ton of work.? Regardless, really cool!
