Trailering My Tartan

I have been following this site for a while as I have "Sonsy", a 1967 T27. I bought her in 1972 and sailed the New England coast until moving to Texas. I left her with a friend on the condition that he take care of her and I could sail her when I could get in tiwn. She spent many years on the Maine coast until my friend passed. Last November I picker her up with a trailer and towed her to my home in Texas. It took 3 1/2 days to to tow her back but it went without a problem. A long tow can be done. My pickup had 350k on the clock when I set out to maine with the trailer.

I now plan to refurb the boat and teach my grandkids to sail. It will be on a lake, which will be a lot different for me but I just could not let her go after 43 years of ownership.

Keep up the comments. I will try to update you on Sonsy's progress. I need to build a new centerboard. I rebuilt the old one several times but it is now beyond repair. I'll replace the through hulls but keep the Atomic 4. Seems to be in fine shape but a little run time may tell more.?
Thanks
Paul

I am also fortunate to have a trailer, but have not actually pulled it myself yet. What are the vehicle requirements for towing it ? I'm ready for a new vehicle and want to take this into consideration. When I went to pick up the empty trailer, the Subaru folks assured me I could pull it, but the folks at the local trailer place laughed at me, so a friend and his truck went with me.

Subaru's have a tow limit of 2,000 #'s , a T27 and trailer is over 9,000

On a trailer on the? highway a T27 is VERY BIG boat (its only in the great ocean it seems small).?? ?Although 9000+ lbs sounds to me a little high for hull and trailer, an older hull does absorb water and get heavier (sound familiar!).? And as any high school kid should be able to tell you, inertial force is ? mass x velocity squared.? So while a Subaru may be able to move a T27 in a parking lot, slowing it down going 65 mph down a hill is another matter – do the math!!? You should look to borrow rather than own a tow vehicle for your yacht.? “Be sure to use the right tool for the job”.

Back in the day, I had a trailer for my 27. ?I borrowed my friends big dually to haul it. ?It’s a load to manage. ?You want something with power, mass, and a long wheelbase. ?There is no way, absolutely no way, a Subaru would be able to do this job. ?This is serious business.

We trailered our T27-2 from Iowa to Michigan behind a friend's big 2500 HD diesel and it was OK, but we definitely knew there was something following us. A couple of years later I borrowed another friend's truck to haul it across Michigan and back (400 miles total). Tried the interstate, but couldn't comfortably keep up with traffic, so switched to paved 2-lane back roads. Much slower, but at least it wasn't terrifying.

Subaru? That's funny. Almost.

Jack,

?

Thanks for chiming in on how important it is to haul a T-27 with good equipment and on roads that would not introduce as much danger as flying down the interstate.? If a T-27 teaches us all any truly profound lesson, it’s that “slow and steady” is more enjoyable and nurturing than “fast and furious”.

?

I wanted to bring you attention? to a different fact in your posting.? A raised deck T27-2, such as your hull #667 would not have been built until after the D&M fire of 1972 when they lost all the orginal T-27 molds and forms.? To list your hull as from 1967 is confusing.

Hey, silly people, I am obviously not communicating well. I had no intentions of trying to tow the boat with my Subaru. I just wanted to pick up the empty trailer. Now that the boat is on the trailer, I am wondering what type of vehicle it would take to move it, so I can check out my friend's vehicles. Since I'll have to buy a new vehicle soon, I'm wondering if it would be practical to get something big enough to move the boat. I'm thinking about the possibility of wanting to quickly run inland if a hurricane is headed our way again.

moved mine with a full-size, extended cab, 4-wheel drive Ford F-150 with a tow-package...and I suspect the later transmission problem might have been related. *,000+ pounds requires a strong tow vehicle.

oops, make that 8,000+ pounds (last crane readout was 8,400 pounds)

Thanks. A Ford F150 is a reasonable vehicle to consider buying......and common enough that I might be able to find one to borrow among my friends.

I've seen excellent posts from you. I can't let you imagine that a F-150 is an adequate tow vehicle for a T-27, please don't try it. Notice the previous poster mentioned it may have destroyed his transmission. Yes, you could move it across a parking lot.

Driving down the road at speed, hills, sway, braking, traffic, there is no way that truck is adequate. That boat will push you down hills, or on the level when you try to stop.

Don't forget?that a?trailer that can carry a T-27 would weigh perhaps 2000 lbs., add that to the actual weight of the boat.

You would absolutely need brakes on all trailer axles, and a working brake controller in the truck. I would use electric brakes, thus not having to rely on surge brakes being activated?by the braking power in the tow vehicle. The vehicle may develop low braking power due to overheated brakes - ever noticed those uphill pull overs for runaway freight trucks on downhill runs?

I have not towed a T-27 but I've moved other (smaller)?boats. I tow with a Chevy 3500 dual wheeled dump truck with an 8.1 liter gas engine and an Allison transmission,?my trailer has electric brakes.?My trailer hitch (the piece you slide in to the receiver and pin)?alone?is very heavy to lift, it's?extremely solid. ?I'm allowed 1200 or 1500 lbs. tongue weight. I would still not like to meet big hills with?my set up.

My rig is tiny compared to actual rigs I've seen towing a T-27.

Just trying to help. Perhaps rent a truck when you need to tow. I don't drive my truck unless I'm being paid, it's not a good personal ride. I get around 7 miles to the gallon.

I concur that 1978 was a good year for T27-2's!

Hi David,?

Oops!!! (Damn it!) ? Of course, you're absolutely right about the date. Our #667 is actually from 1978 and was built at the Tartan plant in Hamlet, North Carolina.

Well, I was probably bound to make a mistake, sooner or later...

Almost.

Subaru's have a tow limit of 2,000 #'s , a T27 and trailer is over 9,000

I am also fortunate to have a trailer, but have not actually pulled it myself yet. What are the vehicle requirements for towing it ? I'm ready for a new vehicle and want to take this into consideration. When I went to pick up the empty trailer, the Subaru folks assured me I could pull it, but the folks at the local trailer place laughed at me, so a friend and his truck went with me.

Monica,

?

The best financial move with regards to my Tartan 27 was when I learned that there was an inland boat yard owner who? had built a trailer to move cruising boats, such that he could haul Piper out of the water and park her in the back yard of my family’s? shared summer home.? All of a sudden yearly Boat Yard bills to pull/store/maintain/launch in the several thousands became $250 x 2 times a year to launch and haul, with me doing the other work.? (Now prices have crept up.)

?

If you can find the people with the right equipment in your world to move/haul your T27 for reasonable money, you will have gained an extremely valuable resource.

?

If you want to trailer-sail your boat – which can be great fun -- get yourself a Catalina 22 or MacGregor 26 or similar boat designed for the purpose.

?

A Tartan 27 is a VERY BIG little boat, or a little BIG BOAT, easily capable of sailing across oceans if properly outfitted. ??It is not a light little boat such as a Catalina 22 good for sailing inland waters and the occasional weekending.

Wow. Do you wear a diaper just in case.? I used to drive large vehicles.? A 26th.lb tractor pulls a 100th. Lb trailer no problem. I have safely pulled my t27 all over the country. Iive in mich and have gone to fla, Maine, chessie bay. All with a 1992 E 150 with a 300cu. Six cylinder motor. Very safely.? Never any trans problems. No overheating. NO braking hassles. The only scary trip was wen I brought the boat home ona Uhaul car trailer.? NEVER b in a hurry. Pay attention.? Plan way ahead. I keep a constant litany on the CB telling all about the slow mover at mile marker --, and I usually run at 55-62 depending on terrain. I drive at my pace. Wen pulling the boat my milage drops to 10-12mpg. I have never been stopped by any police or carrier inspector.. I do flag the trailer. No hassle at toll booths. Overkill doesn't make you safe, tho it may give false sense of safety.
YMMV

I see Ford has updated their towing package. I personally have not owned a pickup for many years, a 1/2 ton back then was like a car,?perhaps a phase builders went through.

You have professional driving experience, so I'll take your word, though I'm not sure that your experience applies well to ordinary drivers. Nor are ordinary drivers listening to CB. I do find that it is not me speeding that causes a problem but rather careless drivers?cutting you off so?an emergency?stop/rapid slowing?becomes necessary. Hard to defensively drive when an anxious person pulls out right in front of you -space for one car - and forgets they have a camp trailer following them. Or sees you signaling and exiting but swerves in front of you and brakes hard to exit in front of you. That is why I think excellent braking is more important than pulling power. Most states do require brakes on all axles today for over a certain load, here I think it is 2000lbs. Most old trailers will not have those brakes, look for a square flange on the axle behind the wheels where brakes can be attached. Generally missing on older boat trailers.

I agree that a private person towing a boat is rarely inspected. But if you are in an accident you can expect to be looked at, and I'd want my liability insurance to cover me.

I do not see people moving boats for hire with a 1/2 ton truck. ?Nor do I consider a 1 ton chassis/cab a large truck or overkill, just a normal work truck.?I own three of them. I just don't think they make great commuter/personal rides.

I like the idea mentioned above of driving what you need daily and hiring someone (not me) to move the boat twice a year. I may do that myself so I don't have to submerge my trailer in salt water.
