cabin sole

I am currently working on my cabin sole.
Using mahogany decking trimmed edges so they are squared, stained and coated with 50/50 mix varnish and thinner so stain will not bleed into maple. Maple is 1/2" wide strips of which will sandwich using ?bisquet and glue .I will lightly sand then apply 3 coats of epifanes high gloss 75/25 then 3 coats epifanes hand rubbed finish.
all materials came to $150.00

Bill,
Looking at your older post re: cabin sole. How did it turn out? I¡¯m planning to replace my cabin sole at some point. I like the traditional look that you went with. What did you use to install? I¡¯m assuming epoxy. Any pictures?
Thanks,

Todd

Hi,
I am also re-doing my cabin sole. But ours is a 27-2, which has the fiberglass sole with pockets to fit 1/8" thick wood inserts. So any info on cabin soles would be appreciated here too, regardless of the model. So far the plan is to replace the wood with vinyl. I am still in the demolition stage, so am still open to suggestions.

Fred,
You might check out Atomvoyages. James replaced his cabin sole with strips of African Iroko, the seams filled with black caulk. At first I thought it was pretty cheesy then I priced a sheet of the plywood with teak and holly veneer. I just tried to find it in his site but had no luck. It might he in one of the later Atom refit projects. I know I saw it in there somewhere. Anyway it looks pretty good at what must be a feaction of the cost. Might try it on mine.

Hello Rob,
Thanks for the info! AtomVoyages is a great website, but I missed the cabin sole project. You are right, the teak and holly sheets are very expensive! I will look into it!

Look at world panel products, they have some options beyond the teak and holly sheets. As always the trade off is your time to rip and plain your own wood vs getting a prefab sheet or srip plank material.

Thank you! I will do that!

Here is a link to some cypress wood that might be of interest to you:?
