While I agree with Marty L. and his approach to using 1/2" plywood and epoxy coating I think that there are other alternatives to metal backing plates. One fellow I know of makes his own out of cloth

We found that mounting our cheap swim ladder (< $100) amid ships where our spinnaker pole is mounted works pretty well. A bungee cord or two on the top of the ladder and even a boat fender lashed
