Sunfish Manufacture and Purchase
Greetings Sunfish sailors. Please help me with a few questions. After some googling it appears that Sunfish are currently manufactured mostly in China and possibly in the UK or Portugal. The final year of manufacture in the US would be 2007. I wish I had the option to buy a new Sunfish made in the US. UK or Portugal would be my second choice.? As for purchasing a new Sunfish, it's hard to find a dealer, but both Sunfish Direct and Laser Performance offer new boats for sale online. Has anyone purchased a new Sunfish from either and had it delivered in a box to their home? Or driven to Sunfish Direct in Michigan and picked one up? Did the process work well? I see there's a new (to me) Ice Blue hull color offered by Laser Performance. Has anyone seen it in person?? I'm interested in a new Sunfish this year. Maybe this pandemic will subside and a little normalcy will return to the world and my 1976 Sunfish is in sad shape. Thanks for your thoughts. Tom |
You could contact Laser Performance or use their Dealer Locator on their website to track down boats. Some dealers may still have New Old Stock boats and be willing to give a discount. If you run into roadblocks let us know where you live and we can reach out to LP to see what options they have.?

开云体育I have done business with Sunfish Direct and have been pleased with their service, products and prices.? I recently ordered a new LP daggerboard and rudder and they arrived as advertised.? On another note, I purchased my Sunfish from a vendor who supplied boats for the Internationals in 2014.? It was raced a few times in the Internationals and then boxed back up in original shipping box and delivered by truck to my home.? Everything arrived just fine.? I wouldn’t hesitate purchasing a new Sunfish hand having it delivered it that’s a concern.? Best of luck. ? Keith ? Keith W. Kenitzer, DC ? Goben Chiropractic Offices, PLLC ? 开云体育If you don’t mind quoting price, what is the price for the package ready to sail.? I am a fix it up guy and just a recreational sailor so I don’t have to have the best.? Bought second hand stuff most of my life.? Converted my 64 to the new rudder with other improvements including a dolly.? The foam blocks are loose on the inside and I have a little leak somewhere.? Sunfish that were used at the 2019 Worlds should be available for purchase. They were 'ice-blue' with orange coamings.
'Ice-blue' looks like white with a tiny bit of color added.?
If interested, I suggest you contact Laser Performance; it seems likely that some dealers (yes, there are a few left) may have bought a few.? Where they were built is still open to speculation. There was a thread about that issue on the Sunfish Forum.

Thanks Jacob. So the Worlds were held in the Caribbean island of Bonaire in 2019? And Laser Performance provides all the boats, since race participants can't easily get their own boat there? Then the boats are sold by dealers at a discount? Makes sense, I did not know even about the Worlds in Bonaire. Interesting. Looks like the Worlds for 2020 will be in Sarasota in October if I'm reading things correctly. I hope it happens. I may even try to get down that way to see what it's all about. You didn't mention if you like ice-blue but it apparently wasn't hideous so that's good. Sometimes I'm blinded by the bright white if I've managed to forget or lose my sunglasses. Tom

Regular Sunfish are $4629 and Race Sunfish are $4923 from Laser Performance?
I just spoke to Brent at LP, they have all colors in stock right now except the blue coaming boat. Most of the hulls built in China will be sold by the end of the Spring and their first full batch of UK boats is coming in the next container. They can ship to residential address, but there are benefits of using a dealer if one is nearby, especially if any warranty repairs pop up or damage in transit.? Hope this helps. -- Cheers Clark and Skipper Our blog Our book? |
Yes, to all you wrote.
The consensus of the Bonaire sailors was that the ice-blue boats looked nice. Of course, the colorful sail helped a lot with the overall look.?
One could buy a boat after the racing was over, and some were sold that way. But the majority went back to the States. I just noticed that the Dinghy Shop has some for sale right now:
https://sailingforums.com/threads/2019-bonaire-worlds-sunfish-package.41844/
With respect to the provision of boats for the Worlds, the class (ISCA) tries to come to an agreement with the builder. That used to be the tradition, but after LP acquired Vanguard, there were problems, and for several years racers had to bring their own boats. Fortunately, LP and ISCA came to an agreement for 2019, 2020 and 2021.?
Identical (and new!) boats are preferred for obvious reasons.?

Great news thanks Clark. I'm very pleased to know I may be able to purchase a brand new UK boat perhaps this summer. No rush, the ice won't be out for a while yet. I'll have to keep on top of that with Brent. There are plenty of sailboat dealers in my area but no Sunfish dealers. I should talk to them about that. Tom

Thx Dr Keith, I'm looking into the idea of purchasing a boat after a race. Glad to know you've had good luck with Sunfish Direct too. It's a long but very doable road trip from my home to pick one up. Save quite a bit of trucking expense but of course the cost of fuel and most likely an overnite hotel would cut into that. But it might be fun. I've had many helpful chiropractic sessions over the years. My DC uses the activator method. Just wonder what you think of it? Tom
