Tiller extension added, swing-style like mine from 1980. For authenticity I also added the shock cord from the daggerboard to the bow handle, to keep the board from dropping in a tack. ?I don’t think I should touch this thing anymore. I’m sure to make it worse.?

I have tried three different tillers.? I have not mastered those universal sticks (33-39 inches long)and in a couple of dicey moves I almost capsized.? I always seem to get it in an awkward position.? I have an original wooden extension type the works pretty good.? Attached is a pic of the telescoping one I am now using.? I shortened a universal stick and when I am far forward in the boat I just pull out the sliding extension and then use the universal if I have to hike out.?

Fair point re tiller extension. I couldn’t decide between some kind of a universal stick-style extension or the original wood one. I’m thinking the latter. Either way it needs one!

Hey Michael,

I struggled a bit with handling the tiller extension at first then I got some advice from a really, really good Sunfish sailor. I made a video about it to help with both adult and high school students in my club’s sailing classes. Maybe it will give you a couple of ideas. No roll tacking here; I was 79, when I made this video. Here’s a link:?

Thanks Steve.? Nice video.? I believe you have done others. I never mastered handling the tiller extension behind the back on tacks.? Maybe I gave up too soon.? I do pretty well on tacks and I am trying to learn this new telescoping tiller extension I made.? It allows me to sit forward and still hike out when needed.? If I cannot master it to my satisfaction I will go back to the tiller that was standard on the early boats.? I am late to sailing and at 77 my flexibility and athleticism are waning, but I ?still get out there a couple days a week and enjoy the many warms days where we have a 10-15 knot SW breeze in NC.? I also have a Force 5 but prefer the stability of the Sunfish on breezy days,? I give up a little speed in the Fish but being able to drop that lateen rig when needed and it’s downwind stability outweigh the extra speed of the Force 5.

Practice to sail with the tiller (in your 'old' hand) behind your back. It takes some 'getting used to'

Always wondered why not turn/face aft during the move from one side to the other during a tack? Seems like your grip on the tiller is easier/better? ?But I don't see anybody do it that way; must be a reason?

I do that, cause I think it’s easier to duck under the boom that way, but I feel like a putz cause none of the “pros” do it that way. I also 6’ 2”. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Same issue here with height. ?I'm going to play around with a higher boom height if we get a sailing season this year.

One of the sailors (maybe more than one) turns to face aft during tacks and argues strongly that it is the best method. One of the problems with that is you have a period of time where you lose awareness of what is in front of you....other boats, your sail, the waves. Looking aft doesn't help if you are in close proximity to other boats, as you frequently are when racing. Once you become accustomed to steering with the tiller extension behind your back for the few seconds it takes to switch hands for tiller and mainsheet it will seem like the most natural thing you could do. I came to dinghy sailing after many years of owning and racing crewed sailboats. I had a lot to learn. There were very experienced Sunfish sailors who were generous with their time and advice. One of the best skill building exercises they suggested was to sail upwind tacking every 20 seconds or so, complete 20 or 30 tacks, then turn downwind and gybe every 20 or thirty seconds. The time between tacks/gybes will depend on the wind. You want to get the boat up to speed and hard on the wind or on your downwind course before tacking/gybing again. The stronger the wind the shorter the time between maneuvers. Do this exercise in gradually increased wind speeds. Your boat handling will become more and more precise. Your fear of capsizing will get less and less. And your thighs and abs will get stronger and stronger. As my mentors said to me, you don't learn much about sailing on a beam reach.

I meant to mention your height. One of the best Sunfish sailors at our club is 6'5".

Where do you launch from?? What conditions do you look for?

I belong to the North Shore Yacht Club at Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park about 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The Park District of Highland Park has not opened the beach. Under normal circumstances our club has around 175 member families. Most are sailors but we also have a very large group of paddlers...kayak and paddle board. To your question about wet suits....a hearty YES for any water temperature below 60-65 degrees.

Make sure the extension is at least 36" to be able to pass it.?

Takes practice.? You will curse it when it gets caught ...

But I am never going to race. ?I prefer smooth and easy cruising. ?A couple of you sent me near-end-of life surplus sails for a project: a cut-down version of the regular sail, even a little smaller than a Minifish sail. My "training wheels", you might say... ? With the extra at home time recently I think I'll have time to make one into a reduced-scale sail, and iIll make shorter booms from conduit or plastic tubing reinforced with dowel, so when the lake opens back up, we'll try this out and report back. ? Once I get comfortable handling the boat with the cut-down sail, I'll put up the original. ?Pity you can't roller-reef a lateen rig:-)
