No 12v power to fridge question Westy/2.2
jimhilton40
I have no voltage to the fridge while driving.Correct me if I've got this mixed up...Seems to me the 12v supply to the fridge is supplied by the VW blue wire. That wire feeds the alternator dashlight which goes to/from the blk/w lead off the alternator. With engine running or just key on I read no voltage at the blk/w wire at the alternator. What's next?-new alternator (otherwise good -shows 14v output). Thanks

Hi Jim,
a) Does your Battery LED come ON when you turn the Ignition ON? b) Have you disconnected the Alt Light Blue wire from your Fridge relay under the driver's seat? c) The Subaru Alternator CAN NOT supply any voltage to drive the fridge relay - hence the reason it has to be disconnected. The Subaru Alternator just back biases a diode in the voltage regulator so the Alt Light will go OFF when the alternator is charging. You will not read any voltage on the Subaru Bk/Wh wire. Let us know what you have got. Tom Burlington ON |

Hi Tom: The led doesn't come on, the blue wire is connected to the relay but I don't have 12v on the red wire to the fuse behind the seat.

I'm glad to know that the bk/wht wire is okay. --- In subaruvanagon@..., "Tom Shiels" <tom@...> wrote:

So maybe I just have a defective relay? Thanks

here is how I have this circuit in my mind. the original set up is clever.. as it only energizes that relay after the engine is running and the alternator is charging .. exactly what you'd want with a high load such as fridge on 12volts or a house battery being charged. Very nice. the subaru alternator will not do that like the vanagon one did. one conversion shop told me once...'we just run ignition on voltage to that terminal of the relay ..where the blue wire was.'. this will work, but only sort of. It energizes the relay as soon as you turn the key on. if the relay was connected to a somewhat discharged house battery ..you'd be connecting that low battery to your starting battery just by turning on the key, not good. I like things very simple.. personally I would probably have a switch sending voltage to that pin of the relay .. so it would be energized when I want it to be, and only then. I would probably use '15' ign on voltage so the relay could not be energized with the key off. On 4/26/2012 7:20 AM, jimhilton40 wrote:
