Motor not started in 12 months
EJ22 motor, 75K miles on it.? My situation is that my Vanagon has been in Body Shop for a year; work is finally finishing up after many delays (medical issues).? I am getting a little worried about firing it up.? Watched a Chris Fix video, and he recommended spraying some stuff into spark plug holes to at least coat cylinder walls a little until oil pump starts doing its job.? Just a 2 second burst into each hole.? I know that a majority of engine wear happens in the first few seconds.? They devised this product for exactly this situation, and it makes sense to me.? I normally run 10W-30 Full Synthetic and the oil was fresh a year ago.? Of course this extra step will add another hour of work for me at the Body Shop.? Am I worrying about nothing, or is Chris Fix's advice correct? |
I have often started my mg sports cars after that kind of storage. I pull the plugs and use the starter to turn over the engine until I get oil pressure and then put the plugs back in and fire it up. If you? some oil in the cylinder use just a small amount because you have a cat converter. My two cents worth. 开云体育I’ve sprayed a shot of WD40 in this situation and then disconnected the injectors and spun the engine over until I had some oil pressure before starting. ?It would be best to change the oil too.?

Thanks for all the insight and quick replies.? Consensus is that some pre-lubrication is correct.? I ordered for $5 a can of Sta-Bil Oil Fogger Spray from Amazon (same as Chris Fix recommends).? It will help me sleep!? As far as the extra time at the Body Shop to do this preparation.....hey, I've waited 12 months...another day or so isn't going to kill me.? And to top it off, I'm going to show up at the shop with a brand new Group 41 battery--I deserve it!

Good approach....where exactly is igniter module, what does it look like?? Would just leaving spark plug wires disconnected for a few cranks do the same thing?

Hey Richard.
One other approach to consider.....Pull your plugs, squirt in your lubricant, then disconnect the igniter module.? Crank her a few times until oil is circulating.? Reconnect the igniter module and start her up.
Best of luck and congrats on getting her back on the road.

开云体育Yup. ?That’d do it!In fact, having the plugs out when you first crank her will lower compression and allow you to get the oil flow going faster anyway! ? Brent
