Looking for an EJ22

Hey all,

I¡¯m looking for an OBD1 (1990-1994) EJ22 long block after mine gave up the ghost last night on our way home from Southern California. Figured I¡¯d check here to see if anyone might have something laying around gathering dust. Let me know!

Thanks!

Connor

you could call steve (619) 445-5232
ssperformance@...
www.subaruperformanceengines.com

just inland from san diego

definitely knows how to build. just depends on how busy he is building sand rails . hes also got some folks who do installs & mods .

I did a franken with a larger block but 2.2 heads . he knows how to do it right.

good luck

M

Steve did my last engine and I had a catastrophic failure at 11k miles. I emailed and called since I¡¯m within warranty mileage wise, but I'm outside the 12 month window. I haven¡¯t heard back yet. I¡¯m hoping to find something to just get me through the summer camping season until I can find the money or time to properly rebuild the engine.

Thanks!

That¡¯s unnerving since I didn¡¯t install for 6 months after picking mine up .. I¡¯m at only 2k miles so far. do you know what failed ? . I spent time at his shop . His off-road credentials are legit .

Not sure yet. I was initially thinking head gasket but it¡¯s beginning to appear to be more catastrophic than that. I haven¡¯t pulled it apart yet, and it didn¡¯t overheat. I drained the oil pan and found more than a gallon of coolant in there that hadn¡¯t yet emulsified with the oil. So it appears that the coolant dumped into the engine very quickly and I shut it down as soon as my oil light flickered on. Found bits of ferrous and non ferrous metals in the oil pan. Hopefully going to take a borescope to it when I have some more time on my hands.

Super disappointed, hopefully I¡¯ll hear back from steve this week to see if we can work out some sort of warranty coverage. If not I¡¯ll need to source something else. Hopefully the heads are still ok, but I haven¡¯t had time to pull them yet.

Well, I have an EJ22 installed per KEP kit, by California Westys in El Cajon, CA.? They get all their motors from Steve Johnson in Alpine.? CA Westys has now done many hundreds; I was #53 about 7 years ago.? Flawless motor performance at 75K miles for me.? Conner, sorry to hear about bad news....but I bet Steve J. will also be very interested in what caused it to fail; hang in there for support from him.? Yes, Steve has a very strong reputation locally in Southern California, and I bet he wants to keep it that way.

Thanks for the response!

I spoke with him this morning. He said he¡¯d be willing to halve his labor cost and give me a deal on parts which I definitely appreciate. He is definitely trying to do the right thing and that¡¯s all I can ask for. I¡¯m just a bit hesitant after this one failed, I¡¯d just hate to go through it all again and have another failure so quickly. I had heard excellent things about S&S, and that¡¯s the reason I had him build my engine. ? But I¡¯ve also some not very great things (including from two very highly recommended Subaru builders that I spoke with who have had to rebuild many of his failed engines). Not sure if it¡¯s worth spending the $ to have him rebuild it, or if I should just get a new EJ257 short block from my local Subaru dealer and do a Frankenmotor build after getting the heads checked at a machine shop here in town.?

Anyways, Steve wasn¡¯t sure what failed and said if it was a fault in workmanship it would have likely occurred in the first 500 miles. I haven¡¯t had much time to dig into it myself, but the failure was sudden and resulted in over a gallon of coolant dumping into my oil pan with little to no emulsification of the oil and coolant. Never overheated and was cruising at about 3500 rpm when it happened. Coolant temps just started to climb (max was 195*F) when the oil pressure light popped on and I immediately shut it down and pulled over. I was climbing a steep grade prior but it was 1am and about 45*F ambient, and my coolant temps were steady at 180*F the entire time pulling that hill. When I drained the oil, along with all the coolant I found a lot of ferrous and non ferrous metal flakes (obviously from the oil being displaced by coolant).?

It¡¯ll be a month or so before I have time to really dive in, but I¡¯ll shoot a borescope down the cylinders and pull the oil pan and pressurize the cooling system and see if I find anything, I imagine it¡¯ll be pretty obvious.?

Thanks!

Connor

If you're going to go new short block which I highly recommend after my experiences get a hold of me.? ?on a road trip I ended up buying one in Oregon no sales tax so that was fun and got a litttle deal off of list price. My rep at that dealer said she would be willing to replicate that for others if they just send a postage label. What I calculated is the postage was less then the tax to overall ended up being a good deal - either free tax or free shipping depending how you look at it.? ?Of course compare against your local person see how much it is out the door. But remember you won't have any warranty on that new block. I'm super happy with how my new short block is performing
