Hey Mike.
If your van has an automatic transmission you can also use a lever (big screwdriver) stuck through the portal on the back/left side of the Subaru engine apron. Here’s a pic of the portal I’m talking about…… I brace the screwdriver against or in one of the holes in the flex plate. I’m honestly not sure if this is also true with a manual transmission Vanagon. Maybe someone here can pitch in and let us know. Best, Brent |

Mike.? I remembered that a few of our brilliant members had some ideas for handmade crankshaft pulley tools.
Not hard to make.? I also remember that someone made a version from automatic garage door opener lifter parts but could not find pictures of that.? I put one together and it worked great.
?
Here's some pointers to file on our site.

"Also you can use two socket extensions with a prybar or long screwdriver lodged between them while you torque the bolt." This could damage the harmonic balancer.? Did when I tried it.? That's why I thought the $20 on the right tool was a good deal. On Wed, Aug 28, 2024, 12:52?AM Wayne Sitarz via <wesitarz=[email protected]> wrote:
