ECU reset

I thought i had this procedure bookmarked ¡ how do you reset the ECU ? Remove pos a neg terminal connectors , then ground out the pos wire ?

Recently had the power wire from alt to black box post shortened (it was overly long) and running hot to touch. This solved erratic idle issue and running rich at start. I still have some bogging at hard acceleration and very minor reving after warm up at a stop light. Yes my IAC is clean and im gonna have the TPS checked and set to proper voltage. Gonna also check vacuum hoses as well as pcv stack.

Any other ideas ?

It's easy to reset ECU to factory settings.? This is especially needed after cleaning out all the gunk in IACV and Throttle body and new PCV valve and associated hoses.? Reason is:? ECU still has old info stored in it, as it was desperately trying to overcome gunk.? To delete all old info in ECU, you've got to drain all electricity stored in it's capacitors, which functions to maintain memory.? First, disconnect Negative at battery.? Second, run a jumper from Positive to that removed ground wire.? Let it sit overnight.? Hook back up.? Immediately RPM's will race towards 3000 or so.? Don't panic.? It will take about 20 cycles of startup, drive, shut down for things to settle down as ECU "learns" new parameters.? Now the ECU will do all the stuff it was designed to do. BTW...this info is for 2.2 motor....but I am sure it's similar for others.

What plugs and gap are you running Sean? Copper or platinum NGKs ran best at 0.043-0.044 I've found with my 02. Smaller resulted in high end bogging.

Richard, I've been trying to understand your suggestion to disconnect battery ground then connect positve to that ground. Won't this still create a short and wreak havoc on the capacitors? Maybe I'm not understanding which positive and ground wires are involved?

No.? It is simple and straightforward.? Like I said, remove Negative from battery.? Hook up jumper from Positive to removed ground wire at Negative like I spoke of.? Electricity will effortlessly drain out of capacitors in ECU; I spoke of overnight, and this is probably not necessary, heck just go buy a pizza or something; but in my experience your really want old memory to be totally deleted.? The ECU's mind will now be back to factory settings. But really....keep the Red Wire on Positive Terminal.? Disconnect the Black Wire on Negative Terminal, typically a 10 mm wrench.? Little wire from Positive to removed Ground; it probably only takes a few seconds.....but, what the heck, capacitors are a little mysterious.....so draining them overnight is not a bad idea.

Shoot...now you guys are making me all nervous!? OK Richard.....settle down....rethink.? First, remove Negative Ground from Battery; heck that can do no harm.? Second...a jumper wire from Positive to Ground Wire; I mean, as powerful as that battery is, once you remove cable to Negative, it's just nothing.? Third....I guess there is no third.? Sitting overnight, all electricity in ECU will be completely drained and back to Factory.? Then reconnect all back together.? And like I said....it will take numerous start/drive/shutdown events for ECU to relearn current situation with all sensors; that poor thing is processing a bunch of information, and much of it comes from dirty sensors.? The Subie Engineers only allowed for incremental adjustments in the "Brain"....so the process is somewhat slow.....they didn't want you to screw stuff up too much.

Just turn on the?dome light and disconnect one battery wire.? The?dome light bulb will??discharge the caps just fine.??
