never did get my comments executed, hence if this is a repeat, I apologize. I was following with interest the thread on cold starts. My observation is not quite as serious at Kjanda's: I find that when the engine is cold that it turns over just fine - I just need to keep the rpms at 1000-1100 for about 10 sec before the engine will not die and stay in idle. Once this is done, no problems at all. That nice quiet, almost inperceptible idle! However, I do need to add some pressure when starting the engine. Any ideas?? Gawzner, on cold starts, our Subaru engine revs to 2000 rpm and stays there

for quite a while (10 minutes or so) and then drops to the correct idle of 850 rpm. Our engine is a 1991 automatic with a slide valve idle stabilizer air bypass system. I suspect that this valve is sticking and should in fact close sooner (1 to 2 minutes would be reasonable). Strangely, my old 1986 Subaru automatic did exactly the same thing: high revs for 10 minutes or until the gearshift moved out of park (and even then sometimes not). -L GawznerJ@... wrote: I may have already replied, but being new at this, I think somehow I |

Toby, our local Subaru Guru gave me a tip for the idle control valve;

(Toby was discovered by Rev. Brian of Orinda when he did his conversion back in the dark ages 3 years ago. Toby had been a VW mechanic for 12 years and knew vanagons inside an out. He was working at Diablo Subaru in Walnut Creek CA. He was much like Hobert, very giving of his time and extremely knowledgeable when dealing with the frustrations of the Wrecking Yard mismatch blues) Rev. Brian was a pioneer in this Vubaru thing. (except he cheated because he had God helping him:) Warren have you got him on line? Idle Control Valve Pull off the larger hose from the valve (the one going over to valve cover) and spray WD 40 into the valve and then replace the hose back on. Many times (he says ) it is just a matter of a sticking valve inside. This lubricates it. BTW my father in law does this same trick with the standard vanagon starter, he drills a hole diagonally thu the bakelite insulator at the end, approx. 1/8" dia., squirts in WD 40 and then plugs hole with self tapping screw. I had to try it 5 years ago when in desert and starter failed. the local parts house did not have bosch rebuild, so rather than buy local off brand i gave it a "shot" and it was still working 4 years later when we did the vubaru conversion.
