Subaru Torque

Tim King

Hi -- guess I'll stop lurking and contribute a _tiny_ bit. I was able to
find the following on the net, it doesn't really help with the question of
low speed torque, but maybe it will help if we get to the point of comparing
apples and oranges ;-) I just noticed KEP has some of this on their site,
too, but maybe this will be helpful for folks lacking web access.

Subaru 2.2 (thru 94)
130 HP@5600
137 ft/lbs Torque @4400

Subaru 2.2 (95)
135 HP@5400
143 ft/lbs @ 4400

This compares to some VW numbers I got from David Marshall's always
excellent volkswagen.org site:

1.9 wasserboxer
82 HP @ 4800 rpm
105 torque at 2600 rpm

2.1 Wasser
90 HP @ 4800
117 torque @3200

2.1 wasser (87-88)
90 HP @ 5500
117 torque @3200

2.0 L 8V Golf Motor (93-98)
115 HP @ 5400
135 torque @ 3200

1.9L TDi
90 HP@4000
149 torque @ 1900

BTW, there's some interesting subaru enthusiast sites out there:
(subaru archives)
1990-94 Legacy scoop:
including a sub link to maintenance schedules:

Tim King
Seattle WA
87 Syncro Westy Wasserboxer (for now... anyone got any sump solutions?)

Thanks Tim, I was not aware of the thru94 and 95 differences, so you have
just educated me!
John.

John, we have a 1986 Syncro Double Cab with a 1991 Subaru transplanted engine (60,000 km) using the KEP conversion kit (with VW Cat
and Muffler). We also have a 1986 Syncro Westfalia camper with the original VW WBX engine (175,000 km). Actually the two vehicles
differ in VIN ending digits by only 20. They must have been on the same assembly line at the same time. :-)

We just complete a trip of 1300 km where I drove the camper and my wife drove the truck. The trip gave us a very good side by side
comparison. IMHO The Subaru EJ22 engine is stronger. It has higher torque, higher HP, and higher max. rpm.

If and when I solve the clearance problem caused by the Subaru oil pan, I'll probably opt to do a KEP conversion transplant for the
camper too.

Is there an improvement in low speed (rpm) torque with the Subaru 2.2 engine conversion as compared to the
VW 2.1 WBX ?.
There MUST be someone on this list that can answer this.
