EJ25 high fuel consumption

Hi folks, I have ej25 in my Westfalia T3 Syncro (syncro swap). Friend of mine made a swap to Ej25 6 months ago. I did not pay attention too much to the fuels consumption since the beginning of new live with ej25 being fascinating plenty with the great performance. Recently, I started to measure fuels consumption manually. It seems to me I am burning about 16-18 litres per 100km mixed city and highway. I am not trashing much. It seems to me high. I also can smell the fuel right after stopping. What should I look into? How I can identify the issue? Or it is an expected consumption? My T3 is offrowad equipped and a bit heavier I guess than usual. Any advice? Where to look first?

Crawl under it while it's running, Hand brake on and wheels chocked), look for leaks. Tighten all hoses and connections. Mine is only 2wd but gets close to double your mileage.

My guess is that you’re losing fuel from a leaky fuel tank or fuel lines.?

Similar issue with my EJ2.2, bad MPGs and smell of fuel. Found a fuel hose that was cracked and fuel spraying out. Luckily I replaced it in time and my van didn’t burn down. Find the problem soon. You shouldn’t be smelling gas.?

Also check fuel injector(s)/wiring/compression, If you're smelling gas in the exhaust.

Hi,
2WD fuel tanks often rust thru on top, where dirt collects in the "groove".
? I don't know about syncro tanks.

Coolant temp sensor?

Wow! Is my math right, you are getting an average of 4 miles per gallon? Double wow!!

I get an average of 18 miles per gallon under normal conditions and 12 miles per gallon fully loaded at high altitude with a 40mph headwind.

You must have a leak somewhere. Isn't there a fluorescence test you can do?

Best of luck.

When people ask about milage I usually tell them to imagine pushing an upright sheet of plywood with your car at 60 mph

Check your grounds, engine and transmission.?

Fuel economy only comes when many separate systems operate properly. Fuel supply can never leak!!! Don't ever drive a car that you can smell fuel, we are out of the 1900's. Compression, brakes, alignment, transmission, electrical system and finally engine management. If everything else ok, the oxygen sensor operation needs to be verified. A flatline O2 will take 5 MPG or more ( chrysler will kill the car). The newer the ECM, the more control the O2 has.?

Hi all, thanks for advices. I checked the fuel pipes. No leakage. Also, I did not notice any leakers under car before with or without engine working. I’ll be investigating more. Does anyone of you know where can I find a ej25 faulty codes meaning description?

My fuel mileage, last I checked, in my 1987 Westy 2.2L with MT (higher geared 4th synchro) was running 17-23mpg.? I live in Florida, so we don't have a lot of hills, or snow.? The evaporator system in Vanagons will smell "fuely" on a full tank, if it isn't working perfectly, but that shouldn't affect your fuel mileage.? Definitely check your lines.? If you are still running the plastic fuel line from front to back, it may be a good time to replace it.
