Re: Looking for an EJ22

Steve did my last engine and I had a catastrophic failure at 11k miles. I emailed and called since I¡¯m within warranty mileage wise, but I'm outside the 12 month window. I haven¡¯t heard back yet. I¡¯m hoping to find something to just get me through the summer camping season until I can find the money or time to properly rebuild the engine.

Thanks!

Connor

I did a franken with a larger block but 2.2 heads . he knows how to do it right.

Hey all,

I¡¯m looking for an OBD1 (1990-1994) EJ22 long block after mine gave up the ghost last night on our way home from Southern California. Figured I¡¯d check here to see if anyone might have something laying around gathering dust. Let me know!

Re: Subaru temp sender

Hi Maciek,

I added a VW temp sender to the Subaru manifold to feed the dash gauge and? has worked perfectly for ~85,000 miles so far!

9MM drill bit, 1.0 x 10MM tap (I think...)

What is a best solution for temp sensor connection to the original dash gauge? I have read on Samba that it is common practice to drill and install standard VW sender in the cooling manifold (I have a reversed one). Does it right solution based on your experience? Is there anything specific I should keep on the back of mind??

Re: Idle Issues.

Subaru engines ground connection is under intake manifold--inaccessible. Installing a new ground wire to a bolt on the intake solved several issues for me.

Also? are you sure your new injectors have new seals properly installed?

Re: Idle Issues.

Thinking i might be running lean. O2 sensors at 0 volts at idle. Seem?to operate through rest of throttle range as they should up to 0.9 volts. I checked fuel pressure and believe i am within spec based on what is in my?factory service manual. I am at 31-32 psi with vacuum 41-42 psi without.

The same is true when cleaning up IACV or Throttle Body.? You have now just introduced new parameters....that is, a clean system.? ECU is not familiar with these new parameters.? No sweat..it will learn...just give it time.

OK Rick,
Let us know how it goes with BB ((Brian).
If you are still having problems, I'll drive down from Lakehurst (North of Peterborough) and we'll get it sorted out.
I have some good friends in Dundas, so I have a place to stay.

Re: Stumble/misfire under load EJ22

I¡¯ve had similar issues in the past which were revealed to be a hairline crack in one of the spark plug wires intermittently shorting to the block or intake. Sometimes you can run it in the dark and see the spark jumping. This issue can be weird because it can be ambient temperature dependent, engine temp dependent, or speed dependent (air rushing past the engine at speed shifts or lifts the wire just enough to stop the short).

The coil internally failing could also cause issues like this which may also jump from cylinder to cylinder, but might not show physical evidence.

Cracked spark plug bodies can also do this, but I think it tends to be more regular.

Re: Idle Issues.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Try wriggling the wires on your harness at different place while engine is running . See if you can locate a harness or sensor issue. I have huge issues at my large grey plug that goes to my sub harness on the motor. Still trying to figure out the issue. Where the short is. Just need dedicated time?

Thanks for all the suggestions.?

I forgot to mention the ignition switch is a new old stock switch that was replaced 2k miles ago. Doesn¡¯t mean it can¡¯t be bad, but I did try fiddling with it with no change in condition.?

Tested resistance between pins 2 and 4 on the TPS. Per the FSM I should be seeing 10-12k ohms with the throttle closed, I¡¯m seeing 8k ohms, and per the FSM I should be seeing 3-5k ohms at wide open, I¡¯m seeing around 2k ohms. I don¡¯t get any weird spikes, resistance is linear throughout the entire range from open to closed but the lower and upper limits are a little out of spec.?

I am wondering if it¡¯s possible I¡¯m getting some pre ignition or a bad signal from my knock sensor causing it to enter a limp mode? I am running a 2.5 short block with 2.2 heads and STI rods and pistons, so it is higher compression than stock. And I¡¯m running at sea level right now versus 5000¡¯ elevation back home. Although I haven¡¯t had a problem with pre ignition in the past at sea level and I¡¯ve probably driven this build around 5k miles at sea level.?

It was also recommended to check the fuel pressure regulator, which i actually am carrying a spare so I will be swapping that out this evening.?

I smoke tested for vacuum leaks a month or so ago and everything looked good, that¡¯s not to say something hasn¡¯t changed, but the problem is so inconsistent and doesn¡¯t feel like vacuum issues I¡¯ve had on vehicles previously.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I¡¯ll do some more troubleshooting and report back if I can find a solution.?

I'm not familiar with the 2.2 specifically but have run several Subaru engines in my Westy over the 30 years I have owned it. If it stumbles on acceleration, it could be the TPS worn out. It is supposed to richen the mixture during acceleration. Diagnose with an ohm meter. Also, water in the gas could be the problem, so try some gas drier--I've fixed several maddening issues similar to what you describe just with that. Also, a common problem is worn ignition switch--can create intermittent issues that are hard to diagnose. Next time it happens, try bumping the ig sw-turn back toward off just a hair, see if it makes any difference.

Hey all,

I¡¯ve got a KEP EJ22 conversion from a 1992 Legacy in my 1982 Vanagon. I suddenly started getting a stumble/loss of power/misfire at cruising speed that is exacerbated under acceleration, primarily when rolling on the throttle after cruising at a constant speed. It¡¯s very intermittent, but is becoming more frequent and I am currently 600 miles from home but have a few free days to troubleshoot. The OBD1 computer is not throwing any codes.

The van has the following new parts:
Injectors
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
MAF sensor
IACV
Camshaft position sensor
Fresh long block from a very reputable engine builder
Harness from AutoVentures

It almost feels like a short in the ignition circuit with how intermittent it is.?

If anyone has had this same issue or has a suggestion of where to start troubleshooting, I¡¯m all ears. I¡¯ve got a decent compliment of tools with me and a factory service manual for my Vanagon as well as the 1992 Legacy that the engine was pulled from so I can run a decent diagnostic.

Thanks in advance!
