Re: Good source for parts?

SixStar Bernie on Ebay for Sixstar headgaskets and Subaru gaskets. Rockauto for Felpro gaskets (half the price of SixStar), Gates timing belt kit (caution:may contain Chinese idlers) or Aisin timing belt kit (specifies Japanese idlers). Found a good? Japanese water pump on EBay. Found a Gates TB kit on Amazon.

I¡¯ve had real good luck with a seller on Ebay, sixstarbernie . He has both official Subaru parts and alternative parts from Japanese or Subaru suppliers. He seems very knowledgeably on Subaru parts.

I'm in the process of refreshing an '06 2.5 out of a Forester (159k). It will soon find a new home in my '89 Westy. There are a lot of options for gasket kits / timing belts / water / oils pumps out there.

?

Any advice from those who have been down this road? Suppliers / Manufactures that are well respected?

?

Thanks

Re: Good source for parts?

I¡¯ve been using Rock Auto, SubaruPartsDeal, and Amazon among others.

Jim.
I'd suggest you take a walk down the message archive lane.? Much time and effort has been put in by members to providing their experience with vendors and preferences to this very topic.
Not snubbing you...just asking that you and others make use of already provided knowledge.
All the best in your search.

Re: 1999 ej25 - Odd idle stumble at stop light diagnosis (long)

It certainly is part of the equation and would explain a lot...? I am going to try to fix this weekend and will report back...

?????? I have noticed that when My VDubaru has an Exhaust Leak Upstream of Either O2Snsr I will feel what I

call "Acceleration Stepping" (instead of the normal Silky Smooth Acceleration I feel a few almost imperceptible

Steps in the speed increase)

Not according to the Fast Forward website:

?

The SpeedPuls VSS is offered in both a 4 and 8 pulse/revolution version, the 4P being appropriate for the Syncro speedo.

Won¡¯t that give you the same problem with the 2x rotation?

Thanks for sharing your positive experience with David and Fast Forward, Stuart.

?

Just to clarify, though, the VSS I ordered mounts to the back of the Syncro speedo.

I¡¯ve ordered other items from David at Fast Forward in the past, and his stuff is top notch.? Please post how you mounted his CV sensor. Thanks!

Thanks for that link, Wayne. You must be a Samba search genius! I spent some time over there over the past several days looking into options, and never found that thread. It nicely summarized all the misgivings I had about the CV based sensors, and the only people not complaining had the Fast Forward VSS.?

?

The GoWesty VSS seems to work fine in my application, though, as far as putting out a nice, clean 0-5V square wave. It's just that the Syncro speedo runs at double speed (thanks for pointing that out, Tom), and that causes the Subaru ECU to throw the rev limiter. From what I saw on their web site, GoWesty is very careful NOT to make any suitability statements with regard to their VSS in situations where an engine conversion is done. That should have been enough of a hint to keep looking.

?

Anyway, that Samba thread helps me feel a lot more confident about the Fast Forward VSS, which I purchased this morning, *before* reading your post! ;)

?

I'll post back once I've had a chance to install it and see how well it works.

Re: 1999 ej25 - Odd idle stumble at stop light diagnosis (long)

Thank you Brent, was actually thinking about the shop vac myself! Didn't think about soapy water and so I will do that too...

Exhaust leaks can cause all sorts of funkiness, fingers crossed it also helps my other issue...

Re: 1999 ej25 - Odd idle stumble at stop light diagnosis (long)

I was repeatedly failing DEQ (Dept Environmental Quality) smog sniff check here in Oregon.? I shoved a reversed shop vac into my tailpipe and squirted a mixture of water and dish soap on the connections.? Found large leaks at the j-pipe (before catalytic converter).
Tightened them and sailed through smog check like a walk in the park.
Best,
Brent

That leak could be it since you have no codes. I used Permatex copper sealant on my cat joints and the exhaust quieted down quite a bit. (leaking between cat and muffler) It remains flexible? and you can wire-wheel it off the gaskets to re-use them.

Re: Rev Limiter Issue?

Scot.
The cv axle mounted vss units are a popular item amongst the subaruvanagon conversion crowd.? Some vendor supplied earlier models had weak magnets but that problem has long ago been resolved.? Easy to install and wire up.

Best,
Brent

Re: Rev Limiter Issue?

They appear to work well.

Re: Rev Limiter Issue?

There's a company in Canada that sells a Syncro compatible VSS:

Anybody tried it?

Thanks!

Re: Rev Limiter Issue?

Thanks, Tom. Looks like I need to find a speed sensor that isn't dependent on the speedo. Small Car and Van Cafe offer options that use a Hall sensor and magnets mounted on the transaxle CV flange. Anybody have experience with these?

Re: Rev Limiter Issue?

Scot,

? Based on what Tom said, it sounds like you need a divide-by-two type of circuit.

I would think that Small Car or some other supplier would have it available.
