Leveling a model 37 15x8 SB lathe 2
I made some levelers from 2" x 3/8" flat stock. I drilled a large divot in the center then epoxied a 1/2" carriage bolt in the divot. I then took a nut threaded it onto the bolt, then 2 heavy washers then inserted them into the mounting holes of the legs. Another washer and nut went on top. It is now level. My concern is that the bolt down hole on these feet that I used for the levelers are on the side of the leg casting, not through the bottom of the inside of the leg. Lots of pressure on that flange casting. This is a manual change gear lathe. I guess my option now is to measure the height of each leg and build shims to replace the levelers.

Fixing 16" Apron Leak 2
I am finally getting my 1969 16" lathe running after moving to my new shop over the last 18 months. I figure its a good opportunity to fix my pesky oil leak at the apron. It is leaking at the back plate. My question is can I get the plate off the back without taking the apron off? I'm not keen on taking the apron off again, and it I do, I probably will allow it to continue to leak. If I recall correctly, it used a paper gasket - is that correct? Thoughts? -- 1969 16" x 6' South Bend Lathe Garage full of old Mopars........

1922 Model 37 15"x8' Max RPM 3
I am putting a model 37 back into service. About 40 years of its life was just sitting at my dad's garage. He had modified it to run off a 220v 1PH motor tied to a truck 4 spd transmision by dual v belts. Then dual v-belts driving the flat-belt cone pulley, 2nd from the bull-gear. I have used it for very minor work over the last 30 years and am now going through it since I am retired. I want to use carbide inserts and need more RPM. I just mounted a digital tach on it and in high gear I am only getting 318 RPM. The books show just under 600 RPM for the max. A gunsmith owned it previously and when I pulled the spindle caps off found bronze bushings which I believe he made. I pulled the caps off to drill and tap for drip oilers. I have ordered a pulley for the motor which will bring it to about 1000 RPM max. Am I exceeding the capability of these bearings/drivetrain? I have attached photos of the bearings.

Breaking carbide inserts parting off? 16
Now I know that for some folks parting off in the lathe is routine, but for some of us it's a real PITA. Or can be. I've tried using a nice HSS blade in a holder with lots of oil and freshly-ground tip and still got it pulling to one side, and now a 1-inch tall steel blade with carbide insert for the first time last night. Yeah, I broke the insert. And yes, it was a cheapo chinese insert. As delivered, the holder body was not well made and the bottom of the slot for the tool was tapered, causing a tilt in the cutoff blade of about 3 degrees or so. Imagine that from an ebay seller! So I put it in the the vise and milled the slot more parallel, which corrected the vertical angle of the cutoff blade, mostly. I tried to minimize stick-out but still got too much chatter. Part isn't that far out from the 4-jaw, but a tailstock center might've helped on chatter. This is on a piece of 1.5" steel rod I got left from a construction project, no idea what alloy. Maybe I have the wrong speed going and need to crank it up for carbide cutting. Heard people say many home lathes struggle to spin fast enough for carbide but that seems unlikely. Haven't tested higher revs yet, wanted to get your thoughts. I saw a youtube video this morning where a guy made a little foot from a piece of CRS that he bolted through his tool holder that sits on the top of the cross slide to keep it from bending down which seems interesting, but not sure if I could do that or not on my lathe.

[sheldonlathe] Breaking carbide inserts parting off?
I made these before, parted off using a hss blade. The cuts were somewhat dished, but it was an interrupted cut with the slots already there.

Home Shop Machinist Magazines 25
Hey Guys: I'm starting to feel my age lately and not been very active here for quite a while. I haven't gotten any response from C.L. so I thought I'd try here next. I have a very large collection of Home Shop Machinist magazines in excellent condition going back to 1982 thru the end of 2022. My major interest now is getting rid of the clutter that has enveloped me for some time. I'm offering the lot (more than 200 issues) to anyone that wants them for any offer of $240 or more. Further details can be found on the Buffalo, NY Craigslist site, under general. The downside is you must buy them all as I can't spend time locating individual articles. I need them all gone, and soon. Shipping is not available, so it has to be a local pickup. I live in western NYS near Niagara Falls. Contact me any way you can (no texting though) if you are interested. Thanks. -js

Slot-milling worked out on my 10k 13
I posted a while back about needing to cut a slot without a milling machine; I thought I'd circle back and let you all know how it worked out. The part I made is the back-gear engagement shoe for a Jet JVM-1044 bridgeport clone milling machine. It lifts a sprocket to engage with the bull gear that drives the quill when in back gears. I'm rebuilding the mill because I couldn't use the "front" gears, due to a horrible racket coming from the head.. the old shoe had broken, and I think it wasn't fully disengaging (although I'm not positive about that... still investigating). Anyhow, I needed to cut a ~0.300" deep slot, about 0.195" wide, and 1" long. I started by laying it out, then cut three kerfs with a bandsaw, and broke out the two loose bits that remained, so most of the material was taken out that way, but the slot needs a good finish, and it needs to be a good sliding fit on a pin in the milling machine. I put two 5/16 threaded holes in the T-nut for my tool holder and clamped the part to that, using a stack of shims to get the appropriate height, then used the compound to dial in the surface so it was parallel with the cross-slide. I dialed in a 3/16 carbide endmill in the 4-jaw to ~0.0005" of concentric, and took three 0.100" deep passes, running as fast as the spindle would go, in the slowest powered cross-feed setting. I had to adjust shims to get another ~0.010" of width, took three more passes (careful to avoid climb milling) and it was done (well, with the slot). Here's a video of the milling op on the lathe: https://photos.app.goo.gl/pHMRytid5rKhwrqAA I'm attaching a few photos of the old / new finished parts, and a shot of the lathe setup. --Rogan

USPS media mail rules was Re: [SouthBendLathe] Home Shop Machinist Magazines
I sell collectable comics and mags via eBay and have kicked this dead horse down the street many times. My *experience* is also that Media Mail items can go missing, even with tracking. I sold a DVD in mid-January and here's where it is today: https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction?qtc_tLabels1=9449011206207978904958 Media Mail rules applies to any publications (not just periodicals) containing advertising, including in-house ads for other publications. There is no mention of "new" or "used" and no exceptions for comic books, church publications, or in-house corporate newsletters. I ship everything parcel post or first class depending on weight and customers do not complain. Per section 170 of the DMM, <https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm> "Books, including books issued to supplement other books, of at least eight printed pages, consisting wholly of reading matter or scholarly bibliography, or reading matter with incidental blank spaces for notations and containing no advertising matter other than incidental announcements of books. Advertising includes paid advertising and the publishers¡® own advertising in display, classified, or editorial style." Looking for HSS inserts 10
Hello all. I am looking for a source for HSS inserts to fit a particular lathe tool I bought not long ago from Shars. The tool (MWLN Tri-lock tool) came with a carbide insert (WNMG 332) but no matter what I do I can't get a decent cut with it. Am hoping that switching to a HSS insert will improve the situation considering the fact that carbide is really intended for speeds a little higher than my South Bend 10 heavy is made for. Shars told me that they do not carry any HSS inserts that will fit that tool. And I have been looking at other sources to no avail. Although I don't really know a good way to search. You can't search for "WNMG 332" cause you then come up with the above listed carbide insert. Thought I'd bounce it off of you nice folks and maybe somebody has a source I don't know about.

OT, buying bulk fasteners
Where do you guys find the best deals on bulk fasteners? Sometimes we find a good price at Home Repot or Lowes for 25# containers of deck screws, but we've been using a lot of the Timberlok and similar type structural screws for wood projects. Talking everything from 2-16" long. Also Tek screws, washer type with rubber gaskets.

change gear sets on epay 3
I don't need these for my lathe but they are inexpensive and might work for others with older lathes or even for any gearing projects. Seems like this Vevor brand is really ramping up to try and be a one-stop for machining stuff. https://www.ebay.com/itm/164579251186?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110002%26algo%3DSPLICE.SOI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D247874%26meid%3Ddef5d2973d4249e4bcb232f4cc7b0960%26pid%3D101111%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D295457849749%26itm%3D164579251186%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DPromotedTopSellersItemsInMetaCategoryItemsV2WithMLR%26brand%3DVEVOR&_trksid=p2047675.c101111.m2109&amdata=cksum%3A164579251186def5d2973d4249e4bcb232f4cc7b0960%7Cenc%3AAQAHAAABEJKn7A6zE%252F9RKeYPcI9p0PHff%252F%252Ba%252FtloJO5EddjOQTTvdwijuRrTWuUp1QJxzNdA4ZYiSUhZy3KGAuec6g3Z5QuCXLTOMzopB1ES0F44qz7p0yd8MnxJYlARm4wGt2%252BVVX4b%252BaDJ1X5cyHlpmGFy9gZZ6bNxg8Kjgp2SdPo3kiNQriddolUqrJ4%252FWfqZff1pJERlYWfpZPuiprV%252FTYTrLu6149EeFS3jfL0xq%252BWv2cocE3VQoLYT2POyysfMilv0t%252BgWvr1TYMSDFnTjtjsdZ%252FQdfOHTtMrIDFVkR8LdxwaO9pu2XnXLD5Q%252Fldawx1TRMMIECNwuVPTnnYGjv3wfcZFlZle%252FEMVv7TMd819Pexsv%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2047675

Selling my Heavy 10x36 7
I have a Heavy 10 with a 36¡± bed, large through hole, set up for C collets. Has a 3-jaw chuck on it. A 4-jaw comes with it but needs the backer plate changed to fit the lathe. 3-phase motor comes with solid state converter so it can run on a 220 line. Mounted on the Southbend base. I will get photos asap I used it in my gunsmithing shop. Great for turning and chambering barrels. Has been in storage for 3 years, protected from weather. Was working fine before moving it into storage. I had thought about opening my gunsmithing business in my new location but have decided against it. Not certain what a fair price would be, researching that. Whoever buys it is responsible for moving, loading and transporting it. OrenT

OT Maybe? Hand cleaners 22
A while back, okay almost 20 years ago, a friend worked at Jorgenson Steel in Denver. You know how that mill oil on steel is... He and I and a roommate started a floor cleaning business and did the floors there at night. They had a hand cleaner in the locker rooms that from what I recall was a green powder, not a liquid, and it worked with or without water and did not leave your hands slippery, greasy or stinky at all. I'd forgotten about it until recently and cannot recall the name but it was amazing. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be and if it's even still made? It was not a typical household brand, more like an industrial supply type product you'd never see on a store shelf. I see Mean Green that looks like a crumbly paste, but it looks different. Any ideas? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DIFLGLQ/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B00DIFLGLQ&pd_rd_w=smaZM&content-id=amzn1.sym.89ee1d2e-380f-4a05-89e5-d22eb0a17762&pf_rd_p=89ee1d2e-380f-4a05-89e5-d22eb0a17762&pf_rd_r=ZX0RHDEETNSJQJY35YR1&pd_rd_wg=r1TW1&pd_rd_r=d22cf4c5-0ad7-4891-9b0d-56de6e5f7693&s=industrial&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWxfdGhlbWF0aWM&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzSlMzUDBITkVYSU1MJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjYxNTY4MVY5SFcxNklUSVhSRiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjkyMjAyM01HRjJXU0NIS1RXSSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2RldGFpbF90aGVtYXRpYyZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= https://www.amazon.com/Worx-All-Natural-Hand-Cleaner-Powdered/dp/B00ANU35DG/ref=dp_prsubs_1?pd_rd_w=HqrQI&content-id=amzn1.sym.6a0b07b6-1a0b-45e8-8450-5c85af215183&pf_rd_p=6a0b07b6-1a0b-45e8-8450-5c85af215183&pf_rd_r=ETTB8QZNH0P60DBV6104&pd_rd_wg=AdJrc&pd_rd_r=1201b4b5-9507-41e5-bcb9-b62235a3bcea&pd_rd_i=B00ANU35DG&psc=1

AXA Toolposts for sale 3
Hello, I have two AXA size toolposts that I am tired of looking at. Both are piston type, One is brand new still in grease paper and the other one has been mounted on a lathe and barely used. I would like to get $ 30 each plus shipping. I do not want to start a discussion about wedge vs piston, but I have one of these on my heavy 10 and it works great! Please get back to me jackandladyreynolds@.... Thanks for the bandwidth. Jack Reynolds

FS: Baldor Motor and TECO drive combo for your lathe or other machines 23
For someone that needs a good variable speed, reversable setup, I am offering a Baldor IDXM7006 inverter duty ? HP motor and TECO Westinghouse L510-101-H1-U Variable Frequency Drive for sale. See attached pictures. The motor is 230/460V 3 phase, frame 56C, ¡°explosion proof¡±, ball bearing, 1735RPM at 60Hz, made in USA and is used but excellent shape. There are minor scratches and scuffs on the paint, no dings or dents. This was used to run a small pump in a lab. The inverter is 110v input, ? HP, again in excellent condition ¨C I would say it almost looks new. I do not have the manual, but it is available online from numerous sources on the web. I purchased both of these for my employer, so I know their history of very light use. When they no longer were needed, I was able to save them from the junk pile. I was planning to use the combo in my shop but they have sat for a couple of years, and I need to reclaim some space. I am offering the combo to this group first for a price of $300. I am located in central NJ and would prefer to not have to ship, as the motor weighs 39 lbs, but will ship via UPS if you are willing to pay the actual cost which I think could be around $100 depending on distance. I¡¯ll give first priority to local pickup, but if I get no takers, I will keep your info and sell to the first person who needs shipping. Thanks for looking and very best John

[BridgeportMill] OT Maybe? Hand cleaners
Zep "Cherry Bomb" is my current favorite. Use it like a waterless hand cleaner, and then rinse it off. If you wet your hands first, it doesn't stick well enough, and most of it just goes down the sink. Smells nice, and seems to really get the grease out of the pores. I don't tend to like waterless cleaners - they leave a strong chemical smell behind. -Tom
