Modern 3/8" Chucks
Good afternoon everyone,
All our employees have a bench lathe with either a Jacobs 11N or 2A chuck, with a soft back for drilling a through hole. Has anyone recently bought a new 3/8" chuck they are completely happy with? I don't think keyless are an option.? Ours are all very old, and most are not holding well. Long time ago I bought a few new ones. "Made in China." The run-out was bad, and i returned them. I look forward to hearing your experiences. Thank you, Payson.? |

If you're using old machines,? in the US, Jacobs is about your only choice. If you're in Europe, Rohm chucks are good. Since you already have Jacobs chucks, you might want to ask about rebuild kits for them. Don't know if they're still available, but they were a while back.? ?only one.? Or you could consult these folks first:? I'm not seeing much in the way of parts for the 2A chucks. But I just made a cursory search, too.? HTH! Bill in OKC William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) The only reason I know anything is because I've done it wrong enough times to START to know better. Expect in one hand, expectorate in the other. See which one gets full first.

I'm glad to see someone else using that slur! It's how I refer to myself, in fact. ;)? But you can only cheap out for so long. Then you must pay the piper!? And they appear to have gotten their money's worth out of the last batch. They should be able to spring for new best quality chucks.? I have to go back and check my chuck collection, and see which rebuild kits I should buy. I have somewhere between half or a full dozen Jacobs chucks, and some others, import and older US. Like whatever they used on a Sears Companion 1/4" drill...? ;) IIRC, it's older than I am.? Bill in OKC William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. 开云体育the 11N is a ball bearing chuck , the 2A is a plain bearing chuck

开云体育Can't speak for Payson, but this Eddie is certainly a museum volunteer.? Having done at least 25 years in post, I did, however, stand down as a trustee / director at September's AGM.? Not only are we an accredited museum, but we are also 2 operational railways (1435 & 610 mm gauges) both covered by the Railways & Other Guided transport Sytems regulations (ROGS).? Add to those the European Pressure Systems directive which applies to our steam boilers & systems & air systems on vehicles, you may appreciate my relief & pleasure at getting back on the tools full time!? I started in 1969. Can anybody finger any suitable trustee candidates, please? Or even ordinary volunteers? Location DE5 3QZ in the UK. Andrei, I don't understand your response. It's not very nice. I AM THE EMPLOYER! Do you know me?
We have? been using 0-3/8" chucks for over 50 years. Not on turrets, SB or Hardinge headstocks, but on specialized, variable speed bench lathes. We grind (no runout), ream, drill (#71, 53, 46...) and use sandpapers on precious metal castings and forgings to manufacture very expensive musical instruments. I know about disassembling chucks and rebuilding them. However, the chuck bodies wear as well, so it's difficult to get 0 to.003" runout on a rebuild. I apologize for sounding like a "do you know who i am." I was only asking about members experience with new / modern chucks, with a #2 internal taper. Best to all, Payson. |
