I can appreciate the sentiment, but some things in this thread confuse me.

My home PC was built about ten years ago.? It runs Windows 10 just fine, and it will run 11, I've just been too lazy to upgrade it.? While there does come a point where you have to upgrade, it's simply because the hardware becomes too slow to run modern software.? Heck, two of my home servers are twelve years old and run just fine on modern VMware ESX 6.7.? Can't upgrade to 7.0 because VMware dropped support for the chipset in ESX, but that's unsurprising given that it's enterprise software not intended to run at home.

Microsoft hasn't blocked support for tape drives in any OS.? They don't include any tools that work with tape, but you can get a free copy of Veeam NFR (Not For Resale) from their website that includes support for up to ten backup instances.? Admittedly, tape drive drivers have always been tetchy things, but that's on the OEM, not Microsoft.? My office currently runs both an LTO6 and an LTO8 tape drive, and tape backups in the enterprise aren't going anywhere.? LTO9 is out now, which holds up to 45TB compressed - more here:?

Cloud storage has its place - data centers offers layers of resiliency and redundancy and availability that almost no organization can match - but it's not the right solution for everyone.? People often forget that "The Cloud" means "other people's computers in other people's data centers".? For those of you hosting a server at home using something like NextCloud instead of Dropbox, that's still "the cloud" - you just happen to own and manage the computers and data centers.? It's a marketing term.

There is truth that upgrading OSes and installing updates is more forced now in the Windows world, but it's also shrunk the global attack surface tremendously.? Most of those updates are for a reason - vulnerabilities that have been found, code flaws, and so on - and patching is a generally good idea.? However, if you don't want to be forced, feel free to switch to one of the zillion Unix variants like FreeBSD, Debian, Ubuntu, or Red Hat.? Of course, those OSes aren't nearly as easy to use, nor are they as easy to manage and maintain, but they're worlds better than they used to be, and most things aren't much harder in Ubuntu than they are in Windows.? Personally, I'm an Ubuntu guy, except for my storage servers which run TrueNAS (a specialized storage-specific version of FreeBSD).

Or you could buy a Mac!

I admit I probably would have used cloud storage for my homework 20 years ago when I was in school.
In fact I essentially did once I got access to dial-up in late '97. What's the difference between using cloud storage and e-mailing a copy of my homework to my web-based e-mail account that I can access from either home or school in case I make the stupid mistake of leaving the homework on the printer and the disk ejected in the drive again?
(Yes, that happened a few times too many, especially when i was up late finishing an assignment and would print it, eject the disk, turn off the computer and goto bed. Then forget to take the disk and paper in the morning when I'm rushing to goto school because I hit the snooze button too many times because I was up too late doing homework and couldn't wake up.)

However, I wouldn't trust it as my primary backup location or for information I'd really want to keep private. I'd use media under my control like diskettes, ZIP disks, CDs, DVDs, flash drives, and external portable drives as my backup medium.
Cloud storage can be snooped by the company that owns it, and they can also take it away or delete it for whatever reason or no reason.

Also the issue with Windows 10's forced updates isn't so much the forced updates (although the computer grinding to a halt and going at a snail's pace or at 486 speeds is annoying) but the forced restarts on Microsoft's schedule. You used to have the option "Notify me of updates but let me choose when to download them" so Microsoft Update isn't hogging your bandwith when you're trying to stream a video or download that 35gb game of your own. Even the alternate "Download the updates but let me choose when to install them" would have been acceptable. It's that those two options that have been available since Windows XP were taken away so the only option is "automatically install updates and force the computer to reboot whenever Microsoft wants even if you're trying to do something with your computer that restarting will make you lose your work" or "turn off updates until you tell it to check for updates, then we'll reset your settings so it goes back to autocratic updates".
In short, if they had left the alternate options to the automatic updates, people would complain less. Just having a prompt whenever you tried to turn the computer off or put it to sleep would work "You have updates waiting to be downloaded. Would you like to have the computer automatically download and install those updates, then shut off your computer, or do you need to shut the laptop off now so you can unplug it and take it home?" would have worked. Periodically putting a prompt nagging you about updates in the notification area would have been less rage inducing than the forced restart.

My biggest concern with the Cloud is location.

I'm in Aus and if the cloud servers are in the US, and what I'm working on is considered to be against the export laws of the US, I could very well loose all access to it.

That's on top of all the other problems l can see.

If you are working from the cloud and your internet goes down due to some idiot digging up the cables, your screwed until they get fixed.
Tasmania had this happen. Both cables got cut in separate instances on the same day. End result, Tassie basically shut down until it was up again.

Ease of access for anyone and everyone with the know how to hack in to the cloud server.

What happens if the server location is taken over by hostile forces (Ukraine anyone?).

I'm sure that there are lots of other problems with using the cloud that I haven't listed as well.

There's an older version of Calibre that does.
You can't use FanficFare with it since the newer versions of FFF require newer versions of Calibre.

Yeah, it's cool, but only runs on Windoze. Might try to see if it works with WINE, though. If it does, I'll pass it along.

Why bother with WINE? Why not just download the Linux version?
Calibre for other OSes

Specifically Calibre for Linux:

Calibre for Mac

There is a 32-bit version, though it hasn't been developed with some of the newest features (V4 instead of V5). Can't tell if it will go back to XP. Worth a try, I suspect.

I do have to give one warning. The installer will ask to install some utils and adware, but you do get the choice not to. Because of this, some AV programs will complain. Just make sure not to permit them.

I use it to convert PDF to ePub, and also to convert webp and png graphics to jpg. Right useful.
