the whole reviewy thing

Jeni Tomlinson

I reviewed on FF, but i had to mosey on down the road to see what
all the hubub was about at your yahoo group. Pretty snazzzy. Loved
the stories. I am definitely waiting anxiously...for the next
installment. When i started writing mine i assured myself that i'd
always be several chapters ahead so i could post easily and not be
swayed by reviewers.
HA.
Yes, I am a reviewer junkie. They started coming in and i threw all
my previously written chapters out in one premature...well. It
wasn't pretty. All that happened was i didn't get reviews on any of
the chapters but the last one. Serves me right.
Sorry. I'm apparently too self-involved to realize this is YOUR
review.
I LOVE your writing style. How difficult is it to allow someone else
to mess with your writing? If my hubby tried to write something i
didn't like on my story i'd be snarkier than hell. Actually, it
works well for us 'cuz he loves to read and review then we get to
brainstorm together about what happens next. I Love that. I just
don't want him to write it. He doesn't want to, so that's all good.
I'm a control freak, as you can tell.
And i'm talking about myself again.
Oh well. I love the stories and i expect more. So deal with it.

It's actually not hard. Alyx and I work up a basic plotline which is a
couple paragraphs, then a detailed plotline which describe how we get
from point A to point B.

If pressed I would have to say I come up with the basic plotline, then
we work together to build the steps needed. Each chapter is broken
down into a series of step statements. Like below.

X Hermione meeting with Dumbledore.
X Tells her to spy on Harry or he will revoke her prefecture.
X She refuses and hands over her badge.
X Snape attempts Legilimency on her and fails.
X Snape attempts to obliviate her and also fails.
X Hermione chuckles and tells them Harry is a most capable teacher
then leaves.
X Harry and Hermione talk about bravery.
X Narcissa is rescued.
X Draco learns of the rescue and Harry gets his Firebolt back.
X First Study Group Meeting
X Draco Encounters Luna.

These steps are part of what happened in Chapter 6 of Sunset. The X
indicates its completed (meaning that step has been written). Some
steps take only a few paragraphs, others like the first one went on
for several pages.

Now Alyx may write one or more of the scenes in a chapter which I
incorporate into my file. Once its complete she takes over the file
and edits it, correcting any grammar or spelling errors. She also
punches up the dialog or description where needed. And yes, sometimes
I get annoyed by her edits. Especially when she drops out what I
thought was a really good line or two or three. But its a group
effort. I can't bitch too much unless I want to sleep on the couch.
Can I? :)

In all truthfulness, I may do a bulk of the writing, but none of this
would see the light of day without Alyx. Serena was her creation in DA
and SC. She wrote nearly every scene involving her and heavily edited
any scene I wrote involving her. The division of labor between spouses
isn't really a bad idea. It makes this a joint project and its always
fun to work with one's spouse.

Hope this answers your question.
