Position Overview
?We seek a motivated and experienced Principal Investigator who meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology to work out of our headquarters in Fairmont, WV, and expand our cultural resource services. The chosen applicant will work with a team of accomplished archaeologists, biologists, and ecologists on various projects in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
This individual will be key in managing and executing the archaeological components of regulatory compliance projects, focusing strongly on Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting archaeological investigations, preparing technical reports and compliance documentation, and leading agency and tribal consultation efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct and/or oversee all phases of archaeological fieldwork (Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery) in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Perform archival research, background studies, and literature reviews to inform fieldwork strategies and assessments.
  • Analyze archaeological data, including artifact identification and interpretation (lithics, ceramics, historical artifacts, etc., as appropriate to the region).
  • Prepare comprehensive, professional-quality technical reports detailing findings, evaluating resource significance against National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36 CFR Part 60), and providing management recommendations.
  • Develop archaeological components of regulatory documents required under Section 106 (36 CFR Part 800), including determinations of eligibility, assessments of effect, and mitigation plans.
  • Assist senior staff and project managers in consultation with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs), federal/state agencies, and other consulting parties.
  • Utilize GIS software for mapping, analysis, and data management related to archaeological resources and project areas (APEs).
  • Manage field crews, project logistics, and ensure adherence to safety protocols and research designs.
  • Contribute archaeological expertise to multidisciplinary projects and larger environmental reviews (e.g., NEPA documentation).
  • Stay current with federal and state historic preservation laws, regulations, policies, and archaeological best practices.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM), with a significant focus on Section 106 compliance projects. ?
  • Proven ability to write clear, concise, and technically accurate archaeological reports and compliance documentation suitable for regulatory review.
  • Strong working knowledge and professional experience with Section 106, USACE permitting, including Appendix C, and the NRHP criteria
  • Strong working knowledge of Section 106 of the NHPA (36 CFR Part 800), NEPA, ARPA, and relevant state historic preservation laws.
  • Proficiency in applying the National Register of Historic Places criteria for evaluation.
  • Experience with standard archaeological field methods, excavation techniques, and data recording.
  • Proficiency with GPS technology and GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. ?
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to travel for fieldwork assignments, potentially for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in challenging outdoor environments and variable weather conditions.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).

  • Experience working in the Upper Ohio Valley and/or Mid-Atlantic region
  • Specialized expertise (e.g., lithic analysis, historical archaeology, bioarchaeology, geoarchaeology).
  • Direct experience participating in SHPO/THPO consultation meetings.
  • Experience managing project budgets and schedules for archaeological tasks.
  • Experience with specific agency requirements (e.g., USACE, FERC, FHWA, BLM).
Work Environment
This position involves office and field-based work (report writing, analysis, meetings). Fieldwork may require hiking over uneven terrain, exposure to inclement weather, and lifting/carrying equipment (up to 40 lbs). Travel to project sites is required.
