Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc.?(CRA) seeks a Geophysical Archaeologist for our Lexington, Kentucky, office. We are looking for a dedicated professional seeking a permanent, full-time position. This position is intended for a qualified individual who will be part of our archaeology and geophysics and remote sensing teams. The candidate would ideally split time between our archaeology and geophysical departments dependent on project needs.


Employment Type
: Salaried; Full-Time

Compensation: $50,000 to $65,000 annually; negotiable commensurate with experience

Job Description and Responsibilities:

    • The Geophysical Archaeologist position works under the direction of a Principal Investigator or a Senior Geophysicist, and will participate in the planning and performance of archaeological/geophysical field projects;
    • Responsibilities will include conducting pre-field research, mobilizing field projects, providing supervision to field technicians, overseeing archaeological field projects, data analysis, authoring or co-authoring written reports of findings, and completing site forms;
    • Project types may include archaeological monitoring, survey, evaluation, and data recovery projects, including projects that will require overnight stays.
    • Geophysical surveys will include setup and breakdown of geophysical and GNSS equipment, carrying/pushing geophysical instruments, and towing geophysical equipment with an ATV
    • Geophysical data processing will include data download and quality checks, basic data processing using proprietary software, GIS, and in-house computer code

Specific skills we are looking for in this position include:

    • Experience with cultural resource management
    • Experience collecting archaeo-geophysical data
    • Experience with GNSS and mapping technologies
    • Overall good computer skills and ability to problem solve
    • Other qualifications include excellent writing and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and technological proficiency that includes some experience with GIS and relational databases.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor¡¯s degree (Master¡¯s preferred) in anthropology, geosciences, or closely related field
    • Experience with field methods of at least one near-surface geophysical technique (GPR, magnetometry, EMI, Electrical Resistance, down-hole methods)
    • Basic GIS skills, experience with an open-source toolkit including QGIS is preferred
    • Basic mapping skills with GNSS and total station
    • Experience with UAS (drones) and SfM photogrammetry is preferred
    • Ability to travel
    • Due to the nature of the role, a reasonable level of physical fitness is required (tasks include extended periods of walking across rough terrain and loading/unloading of equipment)
    • Ability to work in all weather conditions
    • Experience with archaeological excavations methods
    • Ability to cooperate with a team in various environments, as well as work independently
    • Capable of improvising and troubleshooting in the field
    • Able to manage time effectively and prioritize responsibilities

DESCRIPTION

With offices in eight states, CRA conducts all phases of archaeological investigations across much of the United States. The geophysics and remote sensing program at CRA conducts a variety of projects throughout the United States and employs cutting-edge data collection and processing techniques. The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in Anthropology or Geosciences with a background in anthropological archaeology, and a minimum of 1 year of experience with near-surface geophysical field and processing methods. The candidate will be expected to perform archaeological surveys and excavations and execute archaeo-geophysical surveys involving a range of techniques including but not limited to GPR, magnetometry, EMI, and electrical resistance. Projects will also involve the use of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Geophysical project assignments will involve data collection, and assisting with processing data, creating graphical outputs, and preparing detailed reports. It is imperative that candidates be able to work 8 to 10 hour days in a variety of field conditions. Stooping, bending, and lifting are essential functions of these positions.
