Position

Archaeological field technicians for Phase II Test Excavation Near Macdonough, Henry County, GA

?

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring multiple field technicians to help conduct Phase II test excavations at several precontact sites in Henry County, GA.? This testing project is expected to last five to seven days with the potential for long-term, permanent employment for the driven, collaborative, and reliable archaeologist. The ideal candidate will have experience with Phase II excavations in the Southeast- with a keen understanding of methods commonly employed during stratigraphic excavation, an understanding of the prehistoric archaeological record of Georgia or the Southeast, familiarity with digital data collection, and an appreciation for the importance of efficiency and teamwork in test excavation workflows.

This work is scheduled to begin in mid-April 2025 and will last approximately one week ( five to seven days), potentially leading to additional work opportunities in the region.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $24 and $27, commensurate with experience and attitude. UES’ preference is for field techs local to the area but will consider applications from non-local techs. For non-local techs, UES will provide accommodation near the project area as well as $59 per diem and will provide daily transport to and from the site. Non-local field techs will be responsible for arranging their travel to and from the project area at the beginning and end of the field session. This opportunity is fast approaching so apply today! Responsibilities

  • Careful excavation of 1x1 meter test units under the supervision of a UES field director.
  • Careful excavation and sample collection of features and other deposits.
  • Artifact identification
  • In-situ excavation and recording of archaeological features
  • Record test unit levels and artifact inventories using UES-provided digital data collection systems.
  • Perform cursory artifact analysis (e.g., quantification, attribute analysis, photographs, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform manual labor associated with test unit excavation, screening, and backfilling in a range of environmental conditions.
  • Attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Basic proficiency in digital field data collection.
  • Basic proficiency in navigation/orienting (using a compass and GPS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A BA in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field is preferred but is not necessary if the applicant has one or more years of experience in CRM.
  • 3-6 months previous archaeological experience on Phase II surveys in the GA or the southeast generally.
  • Familiarity with precontact and historic artifacts of the Southeastern US.
