"The program growth potential for the Tombigbee Ranger District is
enormous. The Trace Unit is bisected by the Natchez Trace Scenic Parkway

Houston and Starkville are all expanding communities due to large
industries moving into the area. Ackerman is also expected to grow
because of a lignite mining operation that has located just outside of
town. The Tombigbee Ranger District is within a two hour drive of over
two million people. It is becoming challenging for the district to meet
demands for recreation, special uses, fisheries and wildlife. The
district is home to numerous locally rare plants and animals along with
several threatened and endangered species."
"Ackerman's current population is approximately 1,800. For potential
college students, Choctaw County has a program called the Sumners Grant,
where residents of Choctaw County (Ackerman is within the county) are
eligible for monies to attend college. This trust fund currently has
$35,000,000. The amount of the grant varies from year to depending on
the income from the trust and the number of students enrolled. School
systems in both Ackerman and Starkville are highly rated within the
state. There are both private and public schools in Starkville and
Louisville. Vo-tech centers are also available at most commuting
locations. There is one day-care facility in Ackerman. There are
several facilities to choose from in Starkville. There is no Forest
Service day-care available at the Ackerman office. There is also no
Forest Service housing. House prices within the commuting area generally
run a wide range, with the majority being from $80,000 to $120,000. A
large variety of religious denomin ations can be found within the
commuting area as well. There are hospitals and physician services in
the local area, with a large complex located at Starkville and Columbus.
