position summary?

Merjent, Inc. (Merjent) is seeking archaeological field technicians to provide technical support to professional archaeologists. Archaeological technicians will utilize a basic understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, and evaluating cultural resource sites, conducting pre-field office research, field surveys, and site testing, using a variety of reference materials.??

Archaeological field technicians will be hired into 1 of 3 levels (1, 2, or 3), based on the experience and qualifications of successful candidates. If hired as a level 1 or 2, there are opportunities to advance to higher levels.?

These are seasonal positions that are expected to begin in April 2025 and end in October 2025. Employment may continue beyond October if there is continuing work available. The pay rate for these positions starts at $22.50 to $28.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. These are non-exempt positions and will receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a week.??

responsibilities?

  • Conduct archaeological monitoring, surveying, testing, and excavation in support of Phase I, II, and III studies in accordance with a research design to identify, record, and evaluate historic and prehistoric cultural resources.?
  • Contribute to and/or complete Resource/Site Forms in compliance with state/agency guidelines.?
  • Collect and inventory artifacts, ecofacts, and samples in accordance with the research design, and keep an accurate field specimen log.?
  • Conduct photo-documentation of artifacts, features, excavation units, land use, landscapes, historic structures, archaeological sites, specialized equipment or technique usage, and work-in-progress.?
  • Adhere to project health and safety plans and participates in office and field trainings and meetings.?

Archaeological Field Technician 1 (0-2 years of experience):??

o??? Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks on archaeological survey projects and at archaeological field sites.??

o??? Assist Field Lead in activities associated with the excavation of project areas and found features.??

o??? Complete walk-over survey, shovel testing, and excavation of the project area to identify archaeological materials such as historic and prehistoric remains.??

o??? Assist in preparation of sketch maps and field forms, as well as field photography.?

Archaeological Field Technician 2 (1-3 years of experience):??

    • Perform skilled tasks, conduct hand excavations, complete plan and profile maps of excavated units, complete standard feature and level forms, and screen soils to recover artifacts.??
    • Perform flotation of soil samples, walk-over, and shovel testing.??
    • Catalog, package, and label archaeological artifacts.??
    • Maintain field equipment and supplies.??
    • Conduct inventories of cultural resources in areas of proposed projects.??
    • Research reference material such as state and national register files and historic documents.?

Archaeological Field Technician 3 (2-5 years of experience):?

    • See Archaeological Field Technician 2.?
    • Interview source individuals concerning project areas.?
    • Perform on-the-ground area searches for surface and subsurface evidence of historic and prehistoric archeological remains.?
    • Identify and record historic and prehistoric cultural resource sites.?
    • Prepare Archeological Reconnaissance Reports (AARF's) and maps.?
    • Maintain the Archeological Reconnaissance schedule by estimating and reporting expected time of completion of each project.?
    • Advise other employees on methods of cultural resource inventory.?

qualifications and experience?

  • Bachelor¡¯s degree in cultural resource management, archaeology, or anthropology.??
  • Master¡¯s degree preferred, depending on experience.?
  • Completion of an Archaeological Field School.?
  • Ability to work well under pressure and adapt to changing workloads.?
  • Ability to conduct field work for 10+ hours per day, sometimes in adverse conditions (outdoor weather conditions, steep terrain, etc.).?
  • Ability to work weekends, across multiple weeks, in or out of state, and regularly work more than 40 hours per week.?
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.?
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.?
  • Ability to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit.?
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.??
